Google has announced today that Kansas City, Kansas will be the first city to get the search giant's fiber optic network. Kansas City has a population of around 145,000. haha ... finally ATT is going down. I can't imagine having a gbit pipe to my home for 40 bucks lol.

Wonder how exactly "the competition" can deal with this?

No, they'll be able to enjoy it for a bit as long as it's completed before December 2012. ;-)

Also, will Google be the ISP for this service until they can hand it off to someone else?

KC had 450,000 people in 2006, so either they had a massive falling out during the last 4 and a half years or the report is wrong.
