How come I can now copy DVDs

Sorry didnt know how the hell to title this
or if this is the right forum
I spent a long time copying some DVDs to hard disc
and was recording them into DVD recorder using the
TV-OUT. Then last night I had the crazy idea of
playing one in my DVD player and recording it
Now I know this wont work I have tried it before
BUT it did, not only that but 4 more I tried worked
Then I tried a BBC DVD which is proteced up to the hilt
and guess what It worked
So what gives. Have i accidently pressed a secret sequence of keys and made my DVD player macrovision free or something.
By the way my DVD recorder had a service about 5 months ago I wonder if they did something to it
