Right im new so go easy with me and no long technical werds because ive only just started to get in to this video melarky. Anyhoo i ripped a dvd to an avi. Now i want to put it onto a vcd. However the avi needs splitting, so im using a program called virtual dub. SO i go to open video file and i get a message telling me that becos the audiostream isnt of a constant bitrate a skew will be instroduced to the final product. So i get a delay between the sound and the video in the final product. Please tell me how to seperate the audio streaam from the video and decompress it and then recompress it at a constant bitrate. This is a problem ive been encountering for too long now and i desperately need a solution.

To Seperate the Audio from the Video in virtualdub is easy go to "File...." and then "Save WAV". Enter the file name you want for your audio, and give it a ".mp3" extension. You can then use any mp3 converter to make it into a constant bitrate mp3, I suggest CDex.

However saying all this, you mentioned that you had to split the video so you can put it onto VCD. You don't actually have to do this at this stage, if you use your avi file and Tmpeg to make on large .mpeg file, then demultiplex the audio and video streams, and use a program called bbMpeg to multiplex them. The advantage of this is that within bbmpeg you can specify the largest you want a file to be, and it automatically splits the files for you.

Hope this helps.

Okay, if you download the latest CDex from this site, install it and then open the program it takes you to the main window.

What you want to do is, convert the vbr mp3 file to wav, and then the wav file back to cbr mp3.

To do this you first need to setup cdex to know what sort of mp3's you want to create. To do this press F4(or "Options....Settings". This brings up the settings window, where on the encoder tab you can configure what sort of MP3's you want to create. Once you've done all the configuring, click okay.

Now you need to conver the vbr mp3 to a wav. To do this press F12 (Or Convert.....Convert Compressed audio file(s) to Wav File(s)"). This will bring up another window where you need to press the "..." button to navigate to the folder where your source vbr mp3 is. Once selected click "OK" to return to your other window, where you should see your vbr file, select it, and click "Convert". This will then convert create a wav file in the "My Documents\MP3" folder.

Once converted, press F11 (or "Convert........Convert WAV file(s) to Compressed Audio File(s)"). THis will bring up a similar window where you need to select the wav file you just created to now convert it to the constant bit rate file you want.

Once you've done that, the constant bit rate file should be saved in the same folder ("My Documents\MP3").

However if your just planning on making a VCD, you don't need to re-encode it back to a cbr mp3, just convert it to a WAV and then use the wav file as your audio source when you encode your VCD, this means less work for you, and also less quality loss.

To encode at constant bit rate, you need to change the encoder settings in CDex which are found in Options -> Setting and under the Encoder tab. A lot of the settings you don't need to change, but just make sure the VBR Method drop down box is set to Disabled. The rest of the settings are quite self explanitory.

Once you've set this up, follow the directions I wrote, and it should work.

I'm in the different school. I'd rather split the MPEG after converting it from the AVI. I use TMPeg to split it. This way I also have only one file to convert from AVI.

Yeah but its the audio stream im having trouble with. Because when i try to open the file in virtual dub it reencodes the audio to the video or soemthing like that and puts a horrible delay between the video and the sound track

That's why I don't use Virtual dub.
I rip the movie to the hard drive. Open DVD2AVI and point it to the VOB and use this program only to take out the ac3 audio file and make a d2v file.
This d2v file is then used inconjunction with TMPGenc with the ac3 to make the MPEG2 files. I then use the mpeg tools from tmpgenc to split the movie in half.

VCD is MPEG1 and SVCD is MPEG2. THe better quality is usually SVCD because of the higher bit rate and resolution. Go to www.vcdhelp.com and read there infos and forums. THey are a great help.
