NEC 1300A locks up when playing films...HELP PLEASE

My NEC 1300A won't play back films properly,this includes originals,+ and -r disks.Somtimes it will get nearly to the end of the film and sometimes it fails to read the disk at all then locks my pc up.Ive tryed reading the films in PowerDVD,DirectDVD and Windows media player and they all do the same thing.If i use DVDShrink and back up the disks to my hard drive then they play OK with no problems.It also burns disks(With NERO 6),reads games or music CD's with no problems.
My system is.WindowsXPSP1,KT400ALH chipset(XFXMobo),Athlon 2800xp+,512meg ddr 2700 ram and a geforce 440MX with 128 meg of ram.So it cant be because i dont have enough power to play films can it?.
Ive checked its set to DMA,checked all the wires updated the flash of the burner to 1.0b.Flashed the mobo bios.Changed the drive from Master to Slave.Reinstalled Windows.Updated the ASPI layer.Updated Graphics drivers.Checked the ram and im starting to run out of ideas now.
Please Help someone
