You may be thinking I'm being incredibly petty and if I have a problem with the thread titles I can change them myself. Just to make sure there's no confusion about this I'm going to let you know why I'm doing it.

#1 - It's against the rules
Yeah it sounds like an excuse rather than a reason, but if you'll read through the rest of this post you should start to understand why it's a rule.

#2 - They're stupid thread titles
The vast majority of the threads here are asking for help. Saying you're asking for help almost goes without saying. There's nothing wrong with saying you want help, but given the scope of every forum here it doesn't really say anything. Plus there are people who won't read those threads because the title doesn't indicate it's something they can help with. If you want to maximize your chances of getting help you should put something in the title that will draw in the people with the knowledge required to assist you.

#3 - It's rude
If you want others to give you help with something the least you can do is put a minimal amount of information in the title. If you can't be bothered to put a little thought into your thread title why should other people put the effort into helping you?

Until now I've always either ignored this issue or changed thread titles myself. Today I've closed about a dozen of them and to me that's a ridiculous number. This is nothing personal and if your thread is closed for this reason you should feel free to start another thread for your question with an appropriate title.

Edit Jan 1, 07: If you have a complaint about my reason for closing a thread you should PM me, another mod, or an admin. Posting complaints in the Shoutbox of my AD profile won't get a response, but may get deleted. I have no intention of engaging in a public debate about my moderation. If you make a reasonable request for an explanation or wish to explain rationally why you disagree with my decision I'm more than happy to discuss it. If you want to bitch publicly you'll be doing it without my participation - although it may end up causing your account to be suspended temporarily or even permanently.

Idiots like you are the reason all of these rules are in place. If you don't like it feel free to go elsewhere.

Oops! I was one of those whose thread was closed for a vague title. I do apologize. My rationale for using said title is because sometimes it is difficult to come up with a descriptive topic heading that will draw people to read the thread. My thread was asking people, given the specs of a particular DVD recorder, whether it would play my burned DVDS. If I had put "will this DVD play my disks" I thought that might be too generic. Any ways lesson learned: better to be generic that redundant or obscure. Once again sorry

YES it is very petty... guess you must be on some sort of power trip... (closing threads)

i can't see the harm anyone does asking for help... people either help or they don't simple as... you really need to get a grip and get a life if you think that's doing the right thing geez

a HUGE thanks to the people that helped me i am very grateful, but i can't be arsed to use a forum where people are so spiteful as this

Petty would be complaining about being called on the rules...there's not been any spite work in this case.

It's more than obvious you didn't read the few beginning pages of this thread, where the reasoning for more specific thread titles is outlined. It's not spite nor a power trip. It's making things easier and more concise for those who are here to help as well as the moderating staff.

I'm glad you replied Loco; i was going to then i realised that we're something like 6 pages into this one (whoops it's actually 9), it's all been explained to death. We're here to help people and part of that is helping people to help themselves. The rest is up to them.

Well, I just signed in today and I hope my thread is okay... The title does say it all... And the message is all what I can offer for explanation of my problem.

Normally, when I am stuck with something, I solve it my own way, but when I can't do it, it may seem desperate, but I really want advise from people who possess the knowledge about it.

Asking for proper help...

I understand your point correctly. I have signed for websites before and I know the whipslashes of bad behaviour or of placing dumb threads... :-)

..and i have now reopened it for you. We close them only to get the message across re titles; unfortunately it happens so often that if the moderators were to rename them all when we first find them, we wouldn't have time for much else, plus we wouldn't get the message across as effectively.. In fact i always used to rename them, and also used to move incorrectly placed threads into the correct forums. I stopped moving them them for the same reason..

Use a meaningul thread title and people will be glad to help you. We just have a few rules, that's all.
