I know that most of you aren't lawyers, but I would like to know some general opinions on this issue. What does the law say about transferring your copyrighted VHS tapes to DVD, for personal use only? What about TV shows? Is there such a thing as a "fair use" law?

If it is illegal, how can there be so many devices that overide copy protection?

There is a "Fair use" provision in the Copyright act that allows you to make a personal Copy of and VHS/DVD or CD of Copyrighted material that you Own...
It has been Challanged in Court Many times but for the Most part it has been held up...Most of the Court cases haven"t been about the Actualy copying of the Copyrighted Material but about the Methods used to Circumvent the Copy protection mechanisms....As long as you aren"t selling copies and aren"t makeing Multiple Copies of the Same Material you are Pretty Safe and it isn"t like they would Hunt you down for transfering a VHS Tape that you own to DVD....Your Pretty same unless you do something stupid....Cheers

PS: TV shows are 100% Legal to record for you own Use....
