The most important thing to do is find out what disc formats your stand alone home dvd player supports so if you back up movies or create slide shows they will play. I have used both dvd-r and dvd+r since my player supports both and I cannot see any recongizable difference in play or price.

Ive used Sony (oem) dvd-r that I get from ebay, $11 for 25, used them for my xbox backups, movies, data, you name it, made home videos for my family in England (Im in the USA) all boot up, load fine, no freezing, great quality.
The debate on dvd+r and dvd-r will go on no doubt.
(just like the VHS- BETAMAX did)
But Im gonna stick with what is a good, cost efficient, all round disc.
