If you want to be specific, the first company that would later become a part of the conglomerate today called IBM was founded in 1884; they made machines for the census. If you are going to talk about the company before it was called IBM, why stop with the name immediately before IBM? They were already a huge conglomerate in 1911.

It was certainly not. There were four small-time companies with different products that had no connection until they merged in 1911 forming C-T-R.
