It is often useful to read a guide or two before embarking on encoding/burning DVD's.
DVD encoding/compressing/burning is somewhat more complex than CD burning and it helps if you do a little research first.
There are excellent guides/forums on this site that can assist in making successful backups - do a little homework on DVD file types and structures first and all will become obvious.
