I use primarily DVD+R media in my DVD burner. After becoming addicted to these forums :-) , I took people's advice and bought some Ritek Ridata discs from Supermediastore, which offers a guarantee on Ritek discs. However, I just used DVDInfoPro to find out the manufacturer of these discs and it says RICOHJPNR01. They've worked fine so far, but I'm just curious, are these really Ritek discs??? (BTW my Sony DVD+R discs say the same thing but I knew Sony slapped its name on others' discs so I wasn't concerned ... my Philips discs say RICOHJPNR00.) Maybe I'm being too suspicious ... and of course I'll feel like a dope if Ritek and Ricoh are the same company. Thanks for any help.

Karen H.--Dell Optiplex GX240, P4 1.50ghz, 256mb RAM (yeah, I need more), Windows XP Pro w/SP1, 80gb c: drive (replaced the 20gb c: that crashed), 126gb i: drive, 124gb j: drive, 500gb external hard drive partitioned into k: and l: drives, Sony DDU1621/C1 DVD-ROM to rip/encode, Sony DRX-530UL to burn, new Sony DRX-840U to burn DL discs ... need a new computer to go with it!!

The RiDATA +R's are indeed RICOHJPNR01 which is basically the Ritek G04 dye applied by Ricoh. I've used quite a few of them with great results and they will burn 8X on my PX-708A.

Good thing to ask, better safe than sorry :)

Nephilim, My Ridata +R's (8x) show up as Ritek R03 in DVDinfopro. I have had no problems with them. Just wondering if it they are different, depending on what part of the world you are in.

GrandpaBW: RICOHJPNR01 and RITEKR03 discs are completely different.

Blanks with the RICOHJPNR01 media code are 4x-rated DVD+R discs made by Ritek (RiData's parent company) using dye formulated by Ricoh Japan.

RITEKR03 blanks are 8x-rated DVD+R discs made by Ritek using its own dye. The equivalent 4x-rated DVD+R discs, on the other hand, have the RITEKR02 media code.

It's the other way around. Ricoh applies the Ritek dye, hence the Ricoh manufacturer ID on the discs.

GrandpawBW,

The RO3 media ID is correct for the RiDATA 8X media so you're in good shape :)

So they burn well in your 708? I've the same drive but I've yet to try 8X media yet since I'm still using up my 4X stock. I want to try them because I've run into one standalone that simply did not like 4X +R RiDATAs burned at 8X (it's fine with them burned at 4X) and I'm curious to see if media rated for 8X would make a difference.

Take care buddy :)

Thanks Henjie and Nephilim. I was just wondering if all were the same, worldwide, so I had to ask.

Nephilim, the 8x's work perfectly with the 708A. It is like a match made in heaven. They burn at 8x very well. I always check with DVDInfoPro, and never a read error. However, I still burn most of my backups of my movie DVD's at 4x although I have not had any problems with my desktop DVD playing the movies, when I burned at 8x. No freezes or stutters.

You're welcome. I hope that you have as much success with them as I have.

BTW, you have to give your burner a hug before you feed it 8x. lol

Nope. Ritek manufactures the discs in its Taiwan production lines using Ricoh's own dye. Ricoh have contracted Ritek to manufacture the discs. This is why the discs carry the RICOHJPNR01 media code even if they're made in Taiwan. If they're made by Ricoh, they should be made in Japan (Ricoh doesn't have its own production lines in Taiwan).

This is similar to the Verbatim/Mitsubishi contract with CMC, another Taiwan disc manufacturer, for DVD-Rs. "Real" Verbatim/Mitsubishi DVD-R discs are made in Singapore. The CMC-made discs are from Taiwan. But both types carry the MCCxxx media code.

If you want confirmation, check out the Verbatim DataLife Plus and Verbatim DataLife DVD-Rs. The DataLife Plus discs are made in Singapore in Mitsubishi's own factory while the DataLife discs will say "Made in Taiwan". Check the media code using DVDInfoPro and you'll get MCCxxx for both eventhough Mitsubishi doesn't have its own factory in Taiwan. It's pretty common knowledge that "Made in Taiwan" Verbatims are made in CMC's factories. This is true with CD-Rs as well as DVD blanks. This is the reason why DataLife discs are cheaper than DLP discs (subcontracting to Taiwan factories is more cost-effective than making the discs in Singapore or Japan). ;)

UPDATE: I just got info that 4x Verbatim DataLife Plus blanks are now also being made in Taiwan by CMC. Seems like the Mitsubishi factory in Singapore is shifting focus to 8x and dual-layer media. I guess this means that to get the best Verbatim media possible, we better make sure we're buying the Singapore-made discs. :)

I read this thread -- which as a beginning dvd burner, was a litle confusing. I have used RITEK 4X dvd's in the past with great success. However, I found these cheap RiDatas on Amazon.com

Are they the same? And will my movies burn ok? Figured I'd ask the pros.

Recording Layer : -
Recording Speed : 2.4 X

this is the info i got from Nero on my TDK DVD+RW's 2.4x

well, these discs are crap... i got many illegal disc errors and calibration errors with Nero. and these discs are the ultimate flip-flopers, first some work then they don't.

well, i have discovered that they are made by Ricoh, which is the maker of Ritek Ridata discs, and I just ordered Ritek Ridatas.... Should I be worried?
