i have ripped a dvd to my hard drive but there is no .dvd file only a .iso file, what am i doing wrong ?

you've ripped an image of the dvd. Set decypter to file mode and rip the files

Check out the guide in the DVD section of this site. If your DVD is small enough to fit on one DVD-R, it will give you step by step instructions. If it is not, as malum said, you have to switch to File Mode and rip individual files. Good Luck
