My first post, hope its not been covered a million times before.

Something that has always bothered me about Nero was that when i'm using the CD Copy mode and creating an image to my IDE drive (any of the three of them in fact), the read speed of my drive (NEC 2500a) is nowhere near top speed (stuck at 1375kb/s). There is nothing in Nero to change that i haven't already tweaked.

I wondered if it might be the DMA mode in WinXP of my drive, so i checked it and it says that DMA Mode 2 is enabled, so fair enough.

The major issue is not the fact that it takes 12 mins to create an image and then the customary 3mins to burn it, its that when it reads the image it uses up more and more memory up to my 512mb limit. It slowly utilises RAM until its all gone! Everything else is soooo slow until the image is burnt!

Any ideas on how to sort?

Close all running applications such down viruscans and firewalls and anything else that uses resources. Check your virtual memory (paging file size. I've got to tell you that 512 megs of RAM just isn't enough for Win XP to really perform but with a gig it begans to rock.

Does the CD have protections on it? Read errors will easily drop the read speed to 0.1x for extended periods :)

no protection on the cd at all. no read errors and i'm not even trying to ignore the read errors.

as for page file size ~784,000k, that enough? never really understood it. will be upgrading to 1 gig very soon, however surely the problem will still exist.

not actually running a firewall or AV software either. almost everything is turned off!!! really weird this one.

yeah, as i thought.

noticed tonight: copying a dvdr to image then to dvdr through DVD Decrypter doesn't give me the same problem, ram is not eaten up by the application.

that could mean a) its a Nero problem or b) its a problem for anything but DVD Decrypter :D

or c) i'm going mad.
