i have ordered a new dvd burner and i am wondering what software i need to copy dvd's? i have dvd shrink 3.0 and i would like to use this program cuz it will shrink only the parts that i want shrinked. any information will help seeing as how i am new at this and i know very little.
oh, also what dvd writing software will let me copy dvd's? i ordered an oem burner so i need to order some writing software too but dont know work best.

A simple workable combination for successful ripping, encoding and burning is:
DVD Shrink (free) - ensure your have latest version and Nero.
DVD Decrypter (free) is also useful for burning ISO files.
Guides and downloads for Shrink and Decrypter are available from www.afterdawn.com
They are enough to get you started.
It is advisable to create a new folder on your hardrive to save the ripped/encoded programs - these then can be burnt using either Nero or Decrypter and then deleted.
If you are having freeze/conflict problems it is advisable to ensure that you do not have Roxio/Easy CD installed on your sytstem as these will often conflict with other encoding/burning programs.
It is also advisable to ensure that you have approximately 10 to 15 GB free space available on your hardisk to allow successful encoding/burning.
Use reliable media (blank DVDs) - do not use labels on your burnt DVDs - labels generally cause all sorts of freezing problems after a couple of plays.
Use a dual format burner to give more versility (-) dash format media tends to be cheaper and more widely used and more compatable with older DVD players.
In general avoid external DVD burners.
Install a program such as PowerDVD or WinDVD to view movies on your computer - unless you have the correct Codecs, Windows Media Player will not play DVD's.
It is generally better to use a DVD ROM for ripping/encoding and use the DVD burner for burning only.

DVD Shrink (free) + Nero Burning ROM
DVD Decrypter (free) + Recode 2
There you have 2 versatile recording programs from one retail suite. I suspect you will go with the Recode2 if you purchase the Nero Ultra which has it.
Colw gave you some good advice, but some things aren't really needed. It is handy to have a DVD ROM to read and rip the files and a DVD RW to do the burning. About the only real advantage is not having to change discs during the recording procedure. A DVD RW does a great job of reading and writing, as long as you have a quality unit. It might add some longevity to the life of the burner by not having to run the laser on the burner all the time. If you already have a DVD ROM, by all means use it. I am just saying you don't need to run out and buy one.
As for the media, unless you are worried about an old player not playing, +R is the most used and quality media. If your only concern is cheap, you will probably end up with cheap results. Good +R media can usually be purchase for a dollar or less per disc. Check out the media forum for more info on media. Most burners do a faster job with +R. All the newer players usually handle several formats of the media (+/-R, +/-RW and some even play CD audio (check the player). So unless you're just worried about old players, most users go with the +R.
The advice about Nero was good. Nero has one of the best burning ROMs on the market and it is the default burner for DVD Shrink. The suite also has an array of other programs. It handles CD as well as DVD. There is one known problem. The InCD portion is known to cause problems with other recording software. Just don't load the InCD portion. It is a separate part of the package and won't cause problems if not loaded. In fact it is listed separately in the Add-Remove portion of the control panel, it can be removed separately if on a system.
I own Roxio and as long as the program and the drag to disc are turned off, I have no problems. InCD is not quite so easy, that program runs in the background. I may be one of the luckier ones with Roxio. I am just saying, if you have Roxio and suspect a problem, try turning it off before taking the removal steps.
If you purchase the Ultra package from Nero, which I suggest, you get a program named Recode2. Recode2 is one of the better DVD recording programs on the market. You can use the free program Decrypter to rip files and then use them with Recode2. That way you have the option of Shrink with the Nero burning ROM or Recode2 with DVD Decrypter. The Recode2 is superior in the ability to handle larger movies with better quality than Shrink and Recode2 is also capable of leaving in menus during editing (a feature I like). So the choice of Nero gives you even broader options when purchased with the Recode2. You might want to try the 30 day free trial download at the Nero site to see how you like the program. Recode2 does not come with the trial download from Nero.
Shrink does its own ripping and encoding and a burner program finishes the job. You don't have to worry about creating and erasing files while using Shrink. I do use hard drive files for programs like Recode2 and DVD Decrypter is my tool of choice. Decrypter rips the movie file to the top of the directory, so unless you just want to, a separate folder isn't needed. If you have several projects going at once, you might want to consider the idea though as a good one in order to keep track of things. Guess if you want to use the select all + delete commands, you would want those files in a separate folder.
Labels do make the disc look prettier. What happens when a label isn't properly centered is the disc is no longer balanced and that affects the player operation. Labels installed and centered with a good tool cause few problems as long as they don't start coming loose. Unless you just want pretty, you are better off using a quality marker to label the discs. It is a lot less trouble. I like DVD art, so I put on the pretty labels. A plus is that the little kids can pick a movie by the pictures. So, if you opt to add labels, make sure you use a tool to center and quality labels with good adhesive.
As for external burners, I considered one. My only problem was the cost difference. The internal was a lot cheaper for the same brand drive. So, if you have an open slot, the internal drive is advisable. The external drive is more versatile as you can use it with more than one computer. As long as the unit is hooked up properly on a compatible system, there should be no problems.
Most software packages such as Nero come with a DVD viewer. I use the Roxio DVDmax player that came with my burner. It is only a preference as I have several player programs that have come with various recording programs. I suspect I use it because I learned on it first and it does a good job. My Nero has a video viewer program. I also have the WinDVD that came with another burner program. So, if you get a good package, you already have a video player.
DVD recording can be enjoyable and the initial outlay doesn't have to be that much.

Why don't you try Nero 6 OEM Suite. It has Nero Vision Express 2 and it's only $15.00 0r less do a Google check it's an alternative to getting the retail package.

Well, to start fresh with new software here's what I suggest. You need two things (besides a DVD burner). Try the Intervideo DVDCopy Platinum (you can type this in a search engine and get the main page to get the demo which last about 15 days). You also need a region & css free program which gets rid of the css (type in dvd region+css free - you are looking for version 5.02 - this is also a demo version that last 30 days) The region free loads up automatically when you open Intervideo. Now you can backup your dvds. If these work for you, you can buy the license code to make it work beyond the demo time period. I hope it helps and works for you.

Sometimes you get what you pay for. Nero Ultra is a suite that does more than just burn DVD movies. Though that is your main objective. Don't mean to sound like a commercial. The Intervideo software is sold as a single function software. The DVDCopy2 is for recording DVD movies only. There is the Gold at 49.95 and the Platinum is 79.95. Here is the URL.

We weren't talking about this program, but it is a good one. Just to put things into perspective, CCE Basic is $58 and the CCE SP is near $2000 these are some editing software (threw them in there so you could get an inkling that there is some really expensive stuff out there). So good software for DVD video below a $100 dollars is a good deal for the better programs. There are cheaper items that can be found.
You can use the same methods of decrypting as with DVDCopy2. That part of the process is the same. So if you want a program like DVDCopy2 it is a good one. In fact one of the better ones on the current market. I would suggest the Platinum here. More expensive but a better program with more options.
I tried the trial a while back before getting the program. I think it was just for a few days, I may be wrong or they could have changed it. Just be prepared to start using it if you do the download trial.
There is no need to buy decrypters initially. It is probably best to do as advised. Try out the trial programs. Region Free is a good one with 30 days free. I'm not sure if AnyDVD has a trial or not. AnyDVD is my choice of a background decrypter. I do use the DVD Decrypter for a lot of decrypting and it is free. So you have different types of items to choose from.
To me Region Free can be annoying as it opens with discs all the time. Luckily in the settings one can change that. Most of the programs have settings that can be setup to user preferences. Sometimes these programs have to be reset to work with InterVideo's software. I heard mention of a safe mode being turned off in AnyDVD to work with DVDCopy2. I use DVD Decrypter and that isn't a problem.
So, if you are good at using software, try the trials and see what you like. It's just too bad Recode2 in the Nero isn't part of the trial pack.
