Why do players lockup after I install normal codecs.

I have an old sony comp. 766 celeron, ati oem videocard, 96 megs ram, Win98SE upgrade. Recently I started watching alot of divx xvid type avis and downloaded the codecs to play these. The same exact ones in the guide on this forum. After I install the codecs my players lock up when I try to load an avi or mpeg. Also some players freeze up when I open them. What's weird is even Unreal Tournament frezes up on loading up. All this stuff worked fine before I installed the codecs. Divx, Xvid, Ac3. Before you ask, no they weren't in packs I downloaded them individually. I even reformatted and the same thing happened. Before I install the codecs I can watch normal avis, mpegs and wmas with no problem. Afterwards WMP and WMPC lockup but divx player does work sometimes though. I'm thinking maybe sony loads alot of codecs and they are interfering. I tried the guide for gettting rid of codecs on here but it didn't help. I can usually figure stuff like this out but I've tried a lot of stuff and nothing is helping.
