HELP!! I am using dvdshrink, and then burning with nero. I have done this about 12 times with success. Now the last four dvd's I have burned with either dvdshrink or nero alone do not play, and are essentially blank. The error I get when trying to verify data on nero is "cannot mount the written cd." I am using a Toshiba Sattellite Notebook, with a toshiba dvd burner (internal.) What Can I DO?

Well if there is nothing written on the "CD", then Nero can't mount it to do a data verification.
I did some research on this and came up with very little. The only solution I saw that had a positive result was to unplug the drive and then plug it back in again. Loose connection?
What kind of media are you using. Some media can be rather inconsistent in quality and having a few discs work and then some fail is not unusual.
Can you post a burn log? That will answer most of the questions I have. I want to verify that nothing was actually burned onto the disc.
Another thing you might try is downloading Decrypter and doing a burn. Lets try and narrow things down somewhat by figuring out if its a burner problem or a Nero problem.
You may want to remove and reinstall Nero, but at this point I am leaning toward a burner or media fault.
A burn log would be helpful!

Ok, I have been burning right to by toshiba dvd rom, this time I tried burning it to an image file and then writing it to the disc and it came back with an error log. I will post that next.... The burner is in a laptop making it difficult to unplug and replug.

I should have told you to edit your Nero number, sorry about that.
Your Nero is giving you an initial SCSI error which is leading to the "cannot mount" error.
My pals here are right on again, you are in good hands.
Your media, CMC MA - G. AF1, is probably Memorex or Verbatim Data-Life. That checks out here as good:

I have gotten this lots of times, What I do is a fresh download of Nero. This usually solves the problem. You can also try running the Nero registry checker and driver cleaner:

Once you get a new version installed, your DMA turned on for the Toshiba DVD-ROM and those utilitys run, you should be out of the woods. I would consider a new burner if possible. I would not want to be stuck at 1X with that Toshiba. I don't know what else you could use besides an external. What kind of burners fit in laptops?

AAGGG!!! Thank god someone said something else, I was going crazy burning coasters for my livingroom! I have reset my DMA which worked, (thanks!), although I did find an easier way to do this, (which I will post at the end of this for all of you to benefit from!! Hope I can help someone else!?!) Still getting nothing so far, I am going to try the checker, and get back to everyone.
Just in case, I tried to use dvd decryptor to burn my dvd today and it errored also, this could be because I was messing with Nero at the time installing and uninstalling it, but here's the error log anyway incase anyone knows what it means:

General Description
Windows contains a trap in which quite a few computers seem to get caught sooner or later. The trap is described in the following article (and also in another one mentioned below):

For repeated DMA errors. Windows XP will turn off DMA mode for a device after encountering certain errors during data transfer operations. If more that six DMA transfer timeouts occur, Windows will turn off DMA and use only PIO mode on that device.
In this case, the user cannot turn on DMA for this device. The only option for the user who wants to enable DMA mode is to uninstall and reinstall the device.
Windows XP downgrades the Ultra DMA transfer mode after receiving more than six CRC errors. Whenever possible, the operating system will step down one UDMA mode at a time (from UDMA mode 4 to UDMA mode 3, and so on).

Of course, drive firmware being quite complex and certainly containing programming defects of its own, it is not all that difficult to produce such errors. In my case a scratched DVD and later also an unreadable (overburned) CD did the trick, got the drive to choke and Windows to disable DMA for good. Later my hard disk hiccupped just once and also went back to PIO for good.
I had been using my laptop for DVD viewing for years, until I inserted a borrowed and heavily scratched DVD. The player and apparently even the DVD drive choked on it, and when I finally got the DVD to play, I found that playing was jerky and processor load was 100%, roughly half of which was system overhead.
This indicated that the drive had reverted from the usual UDMA (Ultra Direct Memory Access) mode 2 to PIO (Programmed Input Output) mode. No amount of resetting or changing the relevant registry parameters from 1 (try DMA) to 2 (force DMA) helped. Stubbornly the drive kept using PIO mode, and Windows even changed these settings back to 0 (use PIO only).
The following text will refer to the secondary IDE port because that is more often affected, but essentially the same also holds for the primary IDE port, to which the main hard disk is connected in most computers.
Check Your IDE Port Mode
First check what mode your secondary IDE port is currently working in. Go to Device Manager: right-click on My Computer, select Properties, click on the Hardware tag, click on the Device Manager button, click on the plus sign to the left of IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller, double-click on the secondary IDE channel, click on Extended Settings and check whether it is set to DMA when available. Directly underneath that setting is a grey field that shows the actual working mode of your IDE channel. You want the highest possible DMA or Ultra DMA mode there, and you definitely don't want PIO mode.
Normally you don't have to use the registry editor for this, because the normal settings are also available through the properties dialog for the IDE port, but if you want to look at it anyway, the parameter for the secondary IDE port can be found through regedit.exe at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\Scsi\Scsi Port 1
It is named Scsi only for historic reasons. Scsi Port 0 is the primary IDE port, to which presumably your hard disk is connected.
After trying various remedies?in vain?I found the abovementioned article and went to work again. I uninstalled the DVD drive in Device Manager and rebooted, but that did not help either.
So I searched for more and better information, then I went on and did the following.
Re-enable DMA using the Registry Editor
My thanks go to my fellow MVP Alexander Grigoriev who taught me this method.
Run REGEDIT. Go to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
It has subkeys like 0000, 0001, 0002, etc. Normally 0001 is the primary IDE channel, 0002 the secondary, but other numbers can occur under certain circumstances. Check the DriverDesc value to see which one it is.
Delete MasterIdDataChecksum or SlaveIdDataChecksum, depending on whether the device in question is attached as master or slave, but it can't actually hurt to delete both. Reboot. The drive DMA capabilities will be redetected.
Open Device Manager again and check whether the device is now actually using DMA mode. If so, congratulations, you've made it (at least until the next time Windows disables DMA).
Alternative Method?Uninstalling the Port
1. Uninstall the secondary IDE port
To do that, open Device Manager as follows. Right-click on My Computer, select Properties, click on the Hardware tag, click on the Device Manager button, click on the plus sign to the left of IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller, right-click on Secondary IDE Channel, click on Uninstall. Deactivating is not enough.
Reboot to make the changes active and permanent.
After this first reboot Windows will automatically reinstall the IDE channel and the DVD (or CD) drive. This Plug-n-Play process can take a little while, so give it a minute after the boot process finishes.
2. Reactivate DMA
But this is not enough, because unfortunately Windows does not automatically activate DMA on a DVD or CD drive. You have to tell Windows to try to use DMA first.
For that, go to Device Manager again. Right-click on My Computer, select Properties, click on the Hardware tag, click on the Device Manager button, click on the plus sign to the left of IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller, double-click on the secondary IDE channel, click on Extended Settings and change the relevant setting from PIO only to DMA when available.
Now you have to reboot a second time, then you can go to the same place in Device Manager and check whether the device is now actually using DMA mode. If so, all is well.
Desensitize Your Computer's IDE Channels
There's a bit more to it. The following article offers a way to reduce the incidence of this problem, although it still doesn't solve it altogether.

Do read this article because it contains a useful long-term workaround. But you have to go through the procedure described here to re-enable DMA first. Assuming you've done that, insert the ResetErrorCountersOnSuccess registry values mentioned in this article into both the primary and the secondary IDE port registry keys as described.
Unfortunately this is only a half solution, because when you enter an unreadable DVD, you will get 6 errors in a row, and the IDE channel will revert to PIO mode, but at least when you pull out the DVD in time and then insert a good one, the error counter will be reset and it will at least be a bit more difficult for Windows to hobble your IDE drive.

Help Help Help... Ok, downloaded new nero. 6.3.1.1.5 and also ran the two programs. Still recieve Cannot Mount the written cd. Did successfully screw up my roxio cd/dvd, the registry checker removed some crucial drivers for roxio, oh well. Still looking for help on this dvd problem. Anybody got another solution, or something I can try. I guess I could give a crud about using nero, if someone has another program that I should be able to burn my dvd with. I have the decryptor, and roxio, and dvdshrink. Anyone????

Roxio eh, That is Nero's enemy so it tried to kill it by removing the drivers. If I remember correctly, you can go into msconfig and disable Roxio whilst you are trying to use Nero. The CD packet writing function interferes with Nero. My solution is to just completely remove all traces of Roxio and use Nero for your CD work, but thats just me.
Yes you can use other programs to burn with. Your Shrink/Decrypter combination works fine, a lot of folks use just those two programs to back up DVDs.
Sorry about no getting back here sooner, I can't spend a lot of time here during the week. Work and all.
What I would like you to do is to uninstall Roxio, run the registry checker and driver cleaner. After you are done doing that, Rip and compress a movie with Shrink then open Nero Burning ROM and attempt a burn simulation. If the simulation works, burn a disc, I would use a DVD RW so if it fails you can still use it. If it still has problems, post another log.
Set Burning ROM like this...
You want to use the DVD-Video mode, left side, new compilation window.
ISO tab-> DO NOT relax ISO restrictions.
Burn tab-> uncheck write, check simulation.
Next, click on the "New" button and a file browser compilation window opens.
Click on the red Video_TS folder at the far left. It will open.
Now use the browser to find the VIDEO_TS folder that Shrink made.
Once you get the video files into the window on the right, just right click on them to open a drop down menu. Choose "Select All"" from the menu. Right click on them again and select "Copy to Compilation" from the menu.
They should now appear in the second window from the left.
At the top of this window, on the right, make sure your recorder is showing, put in a blank disc and once it gets up to speed select the burn icon. (disc with lit match)
That opens the burn window again, just verify you have it set to simulate and then click on the simulate button. That should do it. Once it is finished, save the log.
