Louis CK selling his latest movie DRM-Free, for $5, asks people not to steal it

article published on 11 December, 2011

Popular comedian Louis CK has decided to release his latest film, DRM-free, and for just $5. When you pay, you can stream the movie twice or download it and own it forever, with no DRM. The comedian does ask that people not steal his film, "Live at the Beacon Theater," and hopefully fans do not. Says CK (via Crunch): To those who might wish to 'torrent' this video: look, I don't ... [ read the full article ]

If its good material people will buy it. If its a piece of crap they will not. I never shell out money for movies, music, books, etc until I have watched/listened/read it first. While I like that this guy is making the content readily available and at a low cost, there is still nothing like free promotion and word of mouth that comes from grabbing something off of torrents first before deciding to buy a legitimate copy.

Huge Louis CK fan so I know I won't be dissapointed. Hopefully his method will prove successful and influence other artists/entertainers to try this medium as a way to be more accessible to their fans without one of the big distribution companies jacking up prices just to line their own pockets while the performers get a small percentage...not to mention the no drm means if I want to have a copy that I bought, I can convert it (if necessary) so I can watch/listen to it in any format, anywhere on any device I own
Cheers Louis CK!

I probably wouldn't have bought this had I not read this, but seeing that louis CK is funny and he paid for this himself, I am going to show my support and cough up the 5 bucks. Hopefully we see more of this because this is how it should be!

This is the way everything should work, in both movie and gaming industry.
I'd gladly pay small sum for product and own it forever instead of large sum and not own anything.

I like how he says that he was informed that this would "make it easier to torrent".
He should know that easier or harder, no matter how it is distributed, it will hit torrent, regardless.
The fact that this will be "easier" will not affect it's torrent availability.
That's the point they should get.

He gets to save all the money normally spent in trying to make it "difficult", which has little to no effect, anyway.

Oh, Im sorry... Did the middle of my sentence interrupt the beginning of yours?

I purchased it.

On the other hand.. I don't play many games but I like Serious Sam. Just kill everything!

While searching for SSII, Steam wants you to join. They charge $19.95 for a six year old game. Steam can stick it you know where. I purchased it from eBay for $5.99

That's ridiculous. Serious Sam II was $20 when it was brand new, in part as an anti-piracy strategy.

That's absurd. The "free promotion" you generously provide helps Louis CK recoup the $250K he shelled out for this movie? And you always pay for the movie after you've watched it and deemed it worthy of your cash? I don't believe you.
If you're going to torrent, then torrent. Don't try to justify it as your moral right.
