Or does it have to be CD-RW?

I've heard of some reading CD-Rs, but I've always used CD-RWs. It also depends on what DVD drive you have, Thompsons won't read shit, others use CD-RWs and you'll be fine.

I have tried about 6 or 7 brands of cd-r on samsung drives, all the ones Ive tried work fine, it seems to be the only drive to read cd-r very well. Although I have heard that philips plays one or 2 brands too.
I Actually had more trouble with the philips drive than the thompson, the thmpson seemed to play any dvd-r I put in it, the philips however is a bit more picky.
I have found that sony dvd-r play on ALL drives.
the sony oem type you can pick up on ebay for about $42 for 50 shipped. Theyre real good.
BoxM is right though, it really does depend on what drive you have. The drives DO read cdrw better as a rule it seems (unless you have a sammy drive, they rock!...even though they only play limited dvd+r)

XB360 hitachi xtreme f/ware, chameleon case, whisper & airflow blue led. XBOX w/ 2.6 2x custom "djboogie" bios. PSP 1.50 w/ devhook .52 % 303 f/ware.

That's all true. But if you do have a thompson drive and you still want to play CD-R or CD-RW (samsung can both) you can still expand your xbox. That's not difficult. The only thing is that it won't replace the drive, but it'll be a second drive. All you need is a powersplitter (also used in normal PC's for drives), a modded xbox and a second dvd-drive which can read dvd and cd-r. You open the xbox, dissconect the power from the harddrive, disconect the IDEcable from the dvd-drive. Connect the splitter on the powercable of the harddrive, connect one end in the harddrive again and one in your (alternative) dvd-drive. Connect the IDE cable to the (alternative) dvd-drive. You can boot up your xbox and if you insert a cd-r with video, XBMP can find it and play it. That's all! Notify that you can't close the xbox nor can you replace the original drive (because of one cable stays connected with the original drive). You can try this. Enjoy!
