So, for the second time in a year I've had an external DVD-RW drive burn out on me. The first being a Pioneer 106 and the second a Sony DRX-510UL. I got around 300 burns out of each of them, but I'm looking for something more. What should I do...?

1) buy a desktop complete w/ an internal drive.
*possibility... www.ibuypower.com/ibp.net/store/configurator.aspx?mid=83
2) give another external drive a chance with my laptop.
3) something other than the previous 2

Even if it means having to buy a new machine all together, I'm willing to do just about anything to find something that will last me at least a year or two without burning out. Are there any burners out there right now that won't burn out so easily? Please give me any ideas you might have. Thanks for your help!

Does your laptop have a dvd-rom? Were you using you external to read and burn?

Yes, my laptop has a dvd-rom drive.

I mainly used the dvd-rom in the laptop to decrypt movies to my hard drive then the external to do the burning. I rarely used the external for anything but burning. As a side-note, the burnt-out Sony drive still reads fine, just doesn't burn.

oumassara,

I asked Praetor(he's a MOD here on A/D) about that possible pc. this was his response.
Quote:
Just a quick glance that the system, i'd reccomend
- either get the "option" for two chassis fans or get some on the side.
- Upgrade to the Corsair XMS Pro ... its only 45 more bucks and a hell of a set of ram
- make the jump to the Western Digital 8MB drive -- BIG BIG BIG BIG diference... and for $10 -- HELL YA
- I dont like the "dual format 12x" designation on the burner -- they arent being specific -- for a reason. Id take the A07 -- but that's me.
- Good call on the sound option -- the nForce2 has superb sound capacity
- Speakers I would think (s)he could get a better deal separately but that's up to them
- Fax/Modem?? If not needed -- dont pay the extra $6.
- Unless (s)he anticipated updating the BIOS a lot (and I dont think theres been a neewer update since 1006 which is the same board i have) then there isnt a need for the floppy.
- Shop around for a monitor independently first -- one can usualyl get a better deal (viewsonic is a great compnay btw)

DOnt have a lot of time right now (seriously getting pissed at soundcard) but I'd look into the option of
- selfbuilding a computer
- getting a more functional case -- those dinky "kewl" cases have no room for circulation nor room for expansion -- also have a look into the PSU if that's a concern
- definitely want to look into cooling options for that chip either the Thermaltake K7 Silentboost for quiet or the Thermaltake Volcano12 for pure power .... well worth the $50 investment

In either case suggest him/her to drop by PC Hardware and make a post ... i will certainly put some more thought into it then when its more "concrete" ... gotta jet -- got a soundcard to toast (ugh... stupid Audigy -- gotta drop down to a Live now cuz the Audigy keeps CRAPPING out whenever i play videogames)

Well thanks for the advice on that computer. I'm starting to run into the money issue, however. Although that is a pretty decent deal, and a great computer, I'll most likely have to buy something a little (like $500) cheaper.
