Here are the rumored Xbox Next specs

article published on 25 January, 2012

2013's Xbox Next (or Xbox 720, whatever you prefer) has seen its first rumored spec sheet today, courtesy of IGN. The successor to the seven-year-old console will run on a Radeon 6000 series GPU, making it "six times more powerful" than the current system. These specs come via "sources close to the project," and the GPU will be a variant of the Radeon HD 6670. Surprisingly the console ... [ read the full article ]

At which point the Radeon HD6670 will be 2 years old. Why don't they just add a GPU that's current around the time of release, (taking into account manufacturing time for launch availability of course)

In other news, go PC graphics !!!

For console graphics to remain relevant compared to PC graphics over the life of the console. An upgradeable graphics chip/card variant is needed. If the console manufactures want to make even more money. Then doing this along with standardized dev tools for the graphics upgrade possibility. Then this would be the best way for consoles to remain relevant in the coming years. Now the biggest issue is the implementation of this. Then again it shouldn't be rocket science to do this.

Well, considering that Sony didn't stick with the BWC "because of a money-saving feature" (yeah right), I wouldn't hold my breath too long on it, but then again, this is Sony were are talking about here folks. Anything can be approved or disapproved these days.

You never learn do you Microsoft? Here we go again, they're trying to rush it out as soon as possible just like they did with the 360. Remember the problems with it M$? RROD, no blu-ray. Games are getting more graphically demanding every 6 months, and be it 6 times more powerful or not, I don't see it having a long life cycle if they will be using an outdated GPU. Heck there's even talk of IBM making the CPU's for them (again) and using only 32nm process, which is great but hard not to overlook that other companies will be releasing 22nm cpu's for PC's & phones this year. If you want to make the console next gen, you need to make the hardware next gen as well, not forcing game companies to come up with amazing game engines because of the limited power of the console. I just replaced my dying elite last month, you're going to have to do better than this Microsoft.

There was no blu ray because they supported hd DVD but Sony paid off Warner brothers so they could secure victory in the media format.

"Xbox Next (or Xbox 720, whatever you prefer)"

Hmm... How about Microsoft NextBox? Or simply NextBox? It's to the point and anyone who doesn't get it would have to be especially dense.

Or, more likely, because Blu-ray was a superior format.

If it was so superior, they would not have to pay Warner brothers billions of dollars in fear of losing. Regardless, it doesn't matter. Blu ray will lose this war to digital media in the future.

I'm honestly surprised it hasn't gotten to the point where you can actually update the GPU yourself. Every game would be able to play on the new XBOX with default settings but you can have advanced settings if you upgrade your consoles GPU...kinda like a PC. Microsoft could make "Xbox only" GPU's and over charge customers for them (as usual) kind of like they did with their HDD's this generation. I just figured the longer a console's life is the longer the company has to make money back on each unit sold at a loss. I can't think of a better way to lengthen the life cycle than to make PC graphics available to consoles. This way the members of the hardcore gaming community who are willing to pay more for things like graphics can have it their way and the average person can just buy the average console. Another thing they could do is when they make another version of their console they could make it more powerful. The launch xbox 720 has the stats above (with the ability to upgrade the GPU) but the new version of the Xbox 720 (comparable to the Elite version in this generation) come with more ram, better GPU, and better processor. If you're already making games for a PC why cant you translate that to another Microsoft product?

Console games are not designed like PC games that can get faster with better harder, they are developed for specific hardware and bug tested for such, to add the possibility of more proformance for the hardware means a whole lot of pain and anguish on the software end. This is why you do not see alot of AAA PC ports/games anymore, its just easier to develop for the console.

There really aren't even any specs in this article other than a guess of a gpu. When I looked at the title of the article I though I was going to see specs on the processor, memory, gpu, storage, etc. I think we'll have to wait a while before we see any real specs to argue about.
