Just a day after appointing Kaz Hirai as the new CEO of the company, Sony has posted an operating loss of $1.2 billion. The loss was larger than expected.
Sony saw the loss on $23.4 billion in revenue for the year, which was down 17 percent to fiscal 2010.

...however, PS3 sales (hardware and software) were actually up. TVs, home audio, cameras, and personal electronics were down and part of the reason was due to the Thailand floods.
Not seeing how PS3 sales are increasing at the rate (if at all) that everyone speculates considering articles from Feb 2nd 2010 state PS3 sales crossed the 30 million mark and NOW there are just 51 million.
Who knows. I find it so hard to believe considering I only know 2 people with a PS3 and about 10 with Xbox 360s (including a couple that have both). Yeah yeah yeah......I'm just a small part BUT, a small part often represents the trend of what going on in the bigger picture.

The three people on my street in my neighborhood who own the XBox literally got the XBox for free as part of throw-in deal on a major furniture purchase. Not kidding. I've seen a lot of such freebie deals going on -- I wonder how much the XBox "sales" numbers are fluffed by this type of deal?
Actually, I know far more people who own a Wii than the PS3 and XBox combined. Personally, I have all three in this house, but the PS3 gets FAR more play time.
The PS3 is not the problem with Sony (it's probably more a solution). Sony just needs to get the rest of their hardware squared away (cameras, TVs, appliances, etc.) before it puts Sony under and we end up losing the best game console out there.
actually i can explain this a lot and really quick.
Sony's sales are down in electronics because they decided to do something nasty with there electronics they decided to focus on smaller products at a larger price tag like the ps3 3d display at 599.99 for that price i could go to target fred meyer or even walmart and purchase vizio's 32 inch 3d tv for 400.00 a lot larger then the 24 inch 3d ps3 monitor also i have noticed nasty thing's sony has done with there blu-ray players especially ones with wifi they have you sign up at sony's site to activate the device then you can access netflix and other streaming services but the player won't let you access these services until you go and activate the player on sony's site first which i find is kinda illegal because sony doesn't have the right to obtain personal information about someone to send them spam and advertisements in there e-mail extremely unfair practice

Funnily enough I think it's exactly this attitude & aproach that is most dngerous to them.
PS3 is old.
Not only is it too old to stake their future on but it is old at a time when the other big players in the market are set to release their new console/media hubs.
Sony's trouble (in my opinion) is that they used to offer stylish and innovative CE products that were plainly sold at a price-point that was great value considering the specs you got.
Now they are just (in so many fields) mere also-rans, but also-rans who expect a price premium for relatively ordinary products.
....and being at the forefront of SOPA & all sorts of idiotic & pointless so-called 'security' (which secures nothing from the true criminal & largely only inconveniences the paying customer) has done them no favours either.
Then there's the fiasco of their hacking.
Lying to their own customers, for weeks, that their financial details had not been compromised.
Way to wreck your consumer image.
Frankly I don't know where they go from here, the game console fanboys are no help at all
(game console sales/profts verses TVs & computers.....it's a drop in the ocean).
Sony are in the deepest brown stuff right now & there's little sign they have anything coming soon to turn this around.
They just got out of OLED (surely the coming next big thing in TV).
Not a move I'd call forward looking.

~52 million in Sept. '11...NOW ~58 million.
Actually last I read it was between 61 & 62-63 Million...but they are down from 15 Mill to 14 Mill for the year for their estimates (of which would have had them up by 200k over the 360 and quite a bit over the Wii) all of this while in the face of ~
Earthquake
Tsunami
Radiation
PSN attack and shutdown
But there are still people who will only focus on a specific point of view, yet won't be open minded enough to look at the overall grander, more realistic understanding of what/where/when/why/how, that explains things with more detail (not being so black & white).
