i have a version 7 un-modded ps2, the mc exploit cd, the 8.13 version of hdloader. i used my friends modded ps2 to load hdloader on to the hdd. now whats the best way to get it to load on my ps2? i have heard the gameshark works. i have gs 1.0 w/dongle. but i have also heard the hdd will recognize if you get the final fantasy XI hdd utilities disk. (if its true, great) could you tell me the easiest way to get it to recognize the hdd??

HD Loader does not install itself onto the hard drive. You have to use the HD Loader disc to boot each time you wish to play a game that is installed to the hard drive. Note also that you cannot put the hard drive into another PS2, load games to it, then install that drive into yours. If you do, HD Loader will simply ask you if you want to format the drive and not recognize that the drive already has data on it.

Not true...I used the HDloader and Maxtor 160GB and the network adapter on my v9 magicV, it was giving me to much problems so I just moved everything over to my other ps2 which is a v7 DMS3 and it loaded with no problems..Games was still on the HDD and was able to play them.

The ownz version has been cracked to remove all of the anti-piracy features such as not being able to install a backup to the hard drive and the issue with not being able to port the hard drive to another PS2.

"Swap Magic Chip"? Swap Magic is a set of boot discs you can buy. Magic chips are no-swap modchips you solder into your PS2. I'm not quite sure based on your response which one you have.

Are you using the Swap Magic discs to boot the PS2 first? You didn't mention that.

Since you're trying to boot a backup disc you need to use the Swap Magic dics first. Try the CD disc first, if that doesn't work, try the DVD disc. Some have reported success that way. Make sure that when you are ejecting the Swap Magic disc that you are doing it as instructed by the no-solder modchip instructions. It's been a while for me but I think you hold Eject until the orange light comes on and when you release, the tray will come out and you'll have a couple seconds before it automatically closes to insert the HD Loader backup.

No backup disc will work without a mod or disc swap. If it still doesn't work using the swap method, it's probably your media then. Try burning at 1x on a high quality blank disc and see if it works.

It should work ok. Before Swap Magic came along people used Gameshark discs to boot backups. Be sure you're using the PS2 disc.

Been lurking here the past few weeks. Never been a gamer but just got my daughter a brand new ps2 (combo pack with the N/A and ATV game) for her birthday so I'm trying to get her some stuff together so it doesn't end up being another dust collector.
Anyway, I found the ps2ownz verion of hdloader and can't get it to work. I was under the assumption that this version could boot on an un-modded ps2. I've tried about 6 different el-cheapo CD-R's and 2 different DVD-R's and nothing works.
I've come to the conclusion that I need some kind of modchip or SwapMagic with the slide card thing and probably better quality media (such as Verbatim). I do have the olsfan version of SMDVD and burned it to the "best quality" CD-R I have in stock and it didn't boot either.
Forgive my ignorance but I'm still learning this PS2 stuff but I have to admit that the gaming itself doesn't interest me and that its all for my daughter's benefit. I am a degreed computer programmer working as a network engineer so I am not technology challenged and will NOT let this contraption beat me! :-)
If anyone can offer some insight I would greatly appreciate it.
