I am trying to back up a dvd that it is a little too late for. There is about a two minute section of the movie that will not play. When viewing the original it is easy enough to skip to the next scene and then rewind to after the error. I tried using DvdShrink and it gets the cyclic redundancy error at that part. I tried using DvdDecrytper with the same result, I even tried again with the I/O setting of ignore read errors, but it just tried over and over again to read it. After all of this I tried toothpaste, yes I was desperate. It seemed to take some of the medium range deep scratches down to only being superficial looking. But still... that one scene gets the error. I wouldn't mind re-authoring and clipping the scene out at all, but in order to do that Shrink needs a full read or so it would seem. I have given up on fixing the scratch, I would just like to circumvent it, any ideas on the best ways to do this?

There was nothing wrong with your advice, I use DVDDR and I've successfully repaired numerous discs. One can't guarantee that it will fix a gouge but I've repaired some severly scratced DVDs with it.
