DVR-A04 able to write future X4 DVD-R ?

Hi,

I was just wondering whether the Pioneer DVR-A04/104 be able to write to X4 DVD-R media (with new firmware...1.33)or is it just the new DVR-A05/105 drive?

It'll write them, and it MAY write at 2x once the fw is upgraded. However, it's likely that as time wears on more and more discs will be restricted to 1x due to Pioneer getting lax with fw updates sadly.

yeah, DVDR-A04 will write at 4x
i read it on pioneer website last 2 weeks ago

I have the A04, and the only thing (I believe) that the firmware does is fix a problem when inserting 4x media (when available). I don't believe that the A04 will ever write to DVD-r faster than 2x, but at least it wont freeze (and possibly damage the drive)
The A05/105 can write at 4x, but I don't know of anyone who actually has burned a DVD-r at that speed. In fact, I haven't even seen 4x dvd-r media.

Whilst you're on the subject of Firmware, how do I update the fireware of a Pioneer 104 in an external firewire enclosure. I tried but the updater failed to find the drive as win2k device manager lists the device by the enclosure name and not the Drive name.

Step 1: take it out of enclosure,
Step 2: connect it directly via an ide cable, Step 3: update the firmware
Step 4: put it back into the enclosure
Step 5: Steal a lot of underwear
Step 6: ????
Step 7: Make lots of $$$
