after researching, i've found out that i have to update my firmware because of the 2x lock that is on the drive. i did this, and my firmware is now version 1.34. i also downloaded dvd region killer and i set it at automatic region so that it detects the region by itself, but something is still locked. i'm still reading at 2x and this is way too long. i burn at 8x just fine. can anyone help?

Hi,
Did you update with an official firmware or a "hacked" firmware that will unlock the drive? Firmware hacks are normally required to unlock the read speed :)

I can't really say for sure if there's a hack out there for your specific model drive. You may try googling for it.
A great alternative (and the one I use) is to get an inexpensive DVD-ROM for all your ripping chores. Most don't have the read speed locked so they can rip upwards of 12-14X right out of the box. You also end up saving a lot of wear and tear on your burner this way.
The Lite-On 166S is an outstanding ROM that goes for around $30.

i've just bought a sony dvd-rom DDU1621 and it slowed down my computer TREMENDOUSLY. i'm running on a:
2.0ghz pentium 4 processor
480 mb ram
24gb of free space on my hard drive
now, when i installed the sony DDU1621 along with the tdk 880n, it takes about half an hour for windows to boot up. this is kind of odd i think because i ran the tdk 880n fine with my other 52x cd burner drive. what do you propose the problem is? maybe the power supply? i have a stock motherboard, stock ram, and stock power supply (came with the comp). the only things i've switched out are the drives. help me please!

Wow! I've never heard of that happening by just adding a drive.
What happens if you remove the Sony? Same problem or does it go away?

Unplug the Sony and see if it still boots up slow. If it does, then it isn't the Sony. If it boots up fast, make sure that you have the proper master/slave setting set on the Sony, plug it in, and try it again.

i've already unplugged the sony and it boots up just fine again. i'm a little familiar with computers, but not too much. everything seems pretty easy to figure out and it should be common sense, so i'm sure if you'll help me with the process of setting the sony drive, i'll be able to do it. my tdk drive is my primary master i believe. on the back of my sony there's a slot for IDE interface connector (i plugged that in), a slot for power supply connector (i plugged that in as well), and a device configuration jumper (i didn't plug anything in). if i don't touch the device configuration jumper, could the drive by default be set on master and cause this problem? if so, should i set it to cable select, or slave?

Sorry to just jump in the middle, but there are two things that I can see that you need. One is that 450MB of ram need to be updated to at least 1 gig if possible, and the other is about the rom. Your burner should be your master and your rom should be your slave. try that and see if it helps.

rnguyen, on the cover of your dvd drives, there will be a picture showing you how to set them up as master or slave by using the jumpers that are on the pins on the back of the drives.
Sibnorth is correct. You need to set them so that the DVD burner is the master and your DVD ROM is the slave. You would set the jumpers that way and then put the DVD burner at the end of the ribbon cable and the DVD ROM plugged into the connection that is close to the end.

thanks guys. sometimes things are so simple and right in front of our eyes, but we don't even notice it. i set the sony dvd-rom to slave and windows booted up just fine. still, however, my read speeds are terrible. the dvd-rom is supposed to read at 16x, and it still taking an hour and a half to read. what's going on? i thought dvd-roms came unlocked? does anyone else with dvd xpress have this problem? if so, it could just be the software? still looking for help guys!

I don't seem to have any problems with my TDK 840G and my sony dvd-rom :)
dvd-9 to DVD-5 from start to finish, using Shrink w/ Decrypter and deep analysis ... about 55-60min. (and slow burning down to 2.4x)

could there be a lock on the dvd-rom? who else uses xpress and is able to read at a faster speed than 2x? is there an option on xpress that allows us to change the read speed? i can't find it anywhere..

should i just get a lite-on ltd-166s? i've heard that reads dvds very well. i have no clue what the possible problem for my sony drive could be. is there another lock that i don't know about? 52 minutes is terrible read times for a drive that's supposed to be 16x.

Rnguyen, have you checked your DMA settings to make sure that they are both reading Ultra DMA 2?

rnguyen,
Just out of curiosity ... When using Xpress, how long does it take start to finish?
When I use XCopy Platium in simple mode(Xpress) on my Gateway ... the process start to finish is around 1 1/2 - 2 hours. It may just be Xpress, have you tried to see how fast it rips just usind DVD Decrypter?

GrandpaBW: they're set at DMA
flip218: the whole process takes an hour, but with a 16x read speed, it should be cut in half.

rnguyen,
I think your expectations are a little too high. An hour, start to finish is really good. That's how long it take me on my dell (doing the whole movie, menu's and extras).

if i have a 16x drive speed, shouldn't my expectations be within its limit? at 8x, my dvd drive burns at 11 minutes, so i figure 16x should read in about the same amount of time.

That sounds about right for a DL disc.
