Hi,

I have Action Replay 2 v2 (PAL) which I can use perfectly to boot CD games. To boot CD backups I simply go to start game without codes, then eject the disc tray and put it my backup, which then boots perfectly. The guide on this site to playing CD backups without a modchip says you need a fliptop or swipe card, neither of which I have yet it still works.

However, I can't get DVD backups to boot. I read then write in DVD Decrypter, then attempt to boot using the DVD booting without modchip part of the guide, except without the use of a fliptop or swipe card. It just freezes on "Updating Code List, Please Wait" and I have to reset the system. It's not a problem with the disc, as I can put it in when I first turn on the PS2 and get just the red screen, no DREs.

Is it absolutely necessary to have a fliptop or swipe card if I don't have a modchip? Keep in mind I can boot CD backups fine without either of them, even though the guide says I need them. Anyone have any ideas on how I can boot my backup?

Thanks.

Just bought a DVD±RW Drive, go easy on me please.

yes, to play backups you need a (soldered) modchip, a fliptop (with boot cd like swap-magic) or a slide-card (with boot cd).
I've never heard you can do without one of those.

It's alright, I worked out how to do it with Action Replay being the only thing I used. No modchips, nothing.

Hold the eject button until the power light turns orange and it ejects, you then have about 3 seconds to swap discs before it closes automatically. It's the same effect as swapping the discs.

Wait a second - you're saying all you have to do to play a backup DVD or CD is:

1. Load up Action Replay
2. Choose "Play Without Codes"
3. Hold the EJECT BUTTON until it turns orange, wait for the drive to eject.
4. Quickly swap the AR disc with any DVD or CD backup.
5. Play the game with No mod chips, No flip tops, No swipe cards?

Is this confirmed by anyone else?

Hang on, I'll write a guide for booting both CD backups and DVD backups just with Action Replay or Gameshark, no modifications to the PS2 or external devices used.

You can still use this method of swaping with Swap Magic right?

I may try it, if I get tired of using the slide tool :P

Give it a try, I have no experience with Swap Magic so I can't guarantee anything, but you've got nothing to lose.
