I just bought some Ritek Ridata discs from meritline.com. The sides of the discs (along the outer rims) are bumpy when you run your finger along it. Is this normal? The other dvd's I bought (different brands) didn't have this problem. I would think that this would cause a weight imbalance when the disc is spinning. Thanks in advance.

Golf balls have dimples to make them more aerodynamic so they fly farther. Maybe it is the same with some disc's. Maybe they spin better in the drive that way but I think that it is probably because they fly farther when you throw them.

veblin,
I followed your way of thinking and tried burning 'Mary Poppins' onto a golf ball but it jammed my drive up. This was a shame because it had a plain white surface and I thought it would be inkjet printable.

OK guys, jester48 was asking a serious question and he (or she) deserves a serious answer. I just bought some Ritek Ridata DVD+R discs from meritline.com too and I noticed the same kind of thing -- the outer rims aren't completely smooth. Just today I burned half a dozen of them (out of the 100 I got) and they were all perfect. So so far, so good. I'll definitely post again if I start having problems, but Ritek has a pretty great reputation (and meritline offers a guarantee) so I'm not too worried.

I answered this question in a previous post.
I wouldn't touch the Ridata discs. I burned a load without any coasters and the playback quality was excellent until a few months later when I went to watch a couple of movies. A lot of them had degraded quite quickly and the movies were unwatchable.

All Ritek media is the same -- CDR and DVDR. Nothing to worry about.

The outward grooves on those disks are the sign of their excellent quality. The more they have the better - it means you have A grade Ritek media. The outter edge of the disk is the most tricky part to manufacture as they need to be pressed very well together and those rims just show how well the disk has been manufactured. Most of the problems of cheeper brands begin towards the outter edge of the disk - the closer you get to it the more errors begin to appear. No such problems with A grade Ritek thanks to those rims

If all Ritek media was the same we wouldn't have half the threads on the subject that we've got.
Most are brilliant, some are awful. I still wouldn't use anything else.

I didn't mean it in that context. What I meant was that all Ritek media have the same bumpy outer edge. Of course Ritek media isn't all the same overall.

Supposed to be grade A Ritek.
I'll check out the numbers tomorrow.
Just been out for a meal so I'm a bit stuffed and tired.
