According to reports, Verizon is looking to raise speeds on their FiOS broadband network, but at a price.
The speed bump will hit all four tiers of the service, with the mid-end 25Mbps download tier being bumped to 50Mbps and the 35 Mbps service hopping to 75 Mbps downstream.

I just can't understand this trend. We're starting to see such great speeds, but in return we get silly data caps. Get to everything on the web quicker but use it less! Makes no sense.

Makes perfect sense. From a business standpoint, that is.
The world's going digital. These companies know it so they're going to rape their customers as long as they can, until there's so much outcry that the government has to step in and regulate it.
