Lo there,
My 1st post, (I hope I don't mess up) :) lol. Anyway, here goes .... As I understand it the the 1st pass gathers information which the 2nd pass uses? Correct? So when I doing medium res rips if in the 1st pass I enable all the four checkboxes (assuming all 4 boxes have to be ticked) in the Profiles Tab, I don't have to do the same in the 2nd pass too? right? or if I do it in both passes, will my movie come out better?

thanking u in advance.
Njoy!

You should try to keep the settings for both passes the same. Turning stuff on in one pass and off in the 2nd or vice versa will hurt the size issue because an accurate calculation in the 1st pass is based on 1st pass settings, and if you then change 2nd pass settings, it may not work as well as when both passes are the same.

to be safe, do just that, but after reading the forums at doom9, and words from the pros and developers,

it is safe to change vhq setting in the second pass and switch trellis, and i can't remember everything else, my bad.

i'll check back

Hmmm .... if the result of the 1st pass is past on to the 2nd, then y should then 2nd pass again do Adaptive Quantiizxation, quarter pixel, etc. Will the quality of the movie matter? if so how? will it be less crisp?

thanking you in advance.

hmm...
1st pass only runs through the video to see how it should be compress.
the 2nd pass is the real encoding. which you may want to turn on those setting.

Also, In Pass's 1's Advanced Options there's a VHQ Mode - now in there - selecting a 4) Wide search takes more time to transcode - does the movie quality improve too? is the time spent transcoding worth it?

thx in adv.

after seeing test made by others and discussed, vhq4 seems to smoothen the video a bit, which means losing detail,
so i wouldn't use it.

make sure you're xvid version is 1.0.1
1.0.0 have some bugs, though i never encounter it.

This is according to the unofficial XViD FAQ maintained by Crusty from the Doom9 forums:

VHQ mode: VHQ is more intensive search and takes a wider approach. Higher settings will slow down encoding significantly. Setting 1 has a relatively small impact and it is recommended for all encodes. Using higher values will give you better quality at the cost of encoding speed.

somethings are not to trust blindly, the initial idea is just that, but the math isn't always perfect.
they need to learn their vectors :P

do some of your own test, and look at the same frame which is better. it is wise to turn off b frame for easier comparison. comparing I and b is not a fair competition

So what's the ruling in the VHQ setting - which value to use (for quality - I don't care if the box runs for 24 hours - but after That - the quality better be good :) lol) 1 / 4?

again thx in adv.
