They are not trying to match anyone. These are good specs that are affordable unlike the PS3 at launch. The PS3 was ahead of XBox and look where that got them (I waited until the price hit $250) and now look at the Vita. Seriously if you want high end graphics then PC is where it's at. As long as consoles has fun software at it's disposal then they have nothing to worry about.

As the first commenter pointed out, the "specs" above don't really reveal anything about the power of the machine. As such, there's really no unbiased way to compare its performance with that of competitors' machines yet.

I agree pc is where you get good graphics (and controlles)...but you kinda missed the point of what he was saying. This thing is coming out with specs that don't appear to be much better than Microsoft and sony, at about the same price, with fewer hd games available, and with a smaller user base. If someone want a cheap system they can already get it, and with better controllers.

We will have to see the actual specs...it might be better than the ps3 in processing power, with more ram. That would actually fit their tradition well...the Wii was only slightly better than the ps2 in such areas, and it sold very well. Of course, the Wii had a really good store display and was optimized for little kids, not sure you can say that about a system with a screen in the middle of an extremely heavy gamepad, with video chat capabilities that many parents would not want their kids to have.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure who they are going after with this one...certainly not hardcore gamers, not kids, not the elderly, and not casual gamers either. The only people I can think of would be the army of hackers that will just buy the controller for various projects...assuming the price is right.

Their audience are the Nintendo fanboys (myself included) that want to play the latest and greatest of their franchises using the new widget.

They also seem to be headed in the entertainment direction as well, something MS and Sony have had their eye on conquering forever. (For me MS dropped the ball because I won't pay for Live just to get on ESPN3 when my Xbox collects dust.)

Quibbling over hardware is kind of dumb too. Nintendo is giving a reason for you to purchase a console versus taking that money and sticking with PC gaming. They're thinking ahead and trying to make something innovative and unique while not charging $1000 for it.

Nintendo didn't want to have one since it's too easy to hack and modify these days, If it is, then it's a modified version of Blu-Ray, but highly unlikely since they want everything proprietary these days,

Would it kill them to at least make the damn thing play DVD's????

I wouldn't waste my time on the last one because as a game machine it's use is limited. But if the Wii had played DVD's it would have been far more valuable and useful to me.

Come on KillerBug read my statement again. I completely understand what he was saying. It's like what Reggie said about Nintendo, they don't want the specs to be to high where the average consumer cannot afford the system (prime example is the PS3) so of course the power of the systems won't be leaps and bounds over the PS3 and the Xbox 360. Their approach is to hit HD but to offer a different experience with the gamepad.

I'm a huge fan of my PS3 I'm playing Borderlands Game of the Year, Infamous 2, and Mass Effect 3. But the fact is I never would have gotten a system if it wasn't for the price drop, just don't have that kind of dough. When Sony comes out with the PS4 and it's over $350, then I won't be buying one anytime soon, which history has told us that a lot of people are in the same boat as me. And don't knock the gamepad until you try it first and the those who actually played with it have confirmed it's pretty light on the hands.

I love how the article's title states that the specs are released and then the article itself say a lot of nothing. Did they have Chevy Chase do the press conference like this...

They've only given Japan pricing so far (30,000 Yen). There's not a direct currency conversion, though, as that would be just under US$300, but that's about the same price Sony sells the 320GB PS3 for in Japan, but that's US$350, so US$299.99-349.99 would seem to be the price range (and that MAY not include the GamePad controller).

The rumors I heard at the E3 show floor was $350 to $400. The conversion for 30000 yen to US is around $377. We'll see if the real specs and US pricing will be revealed at Nintendo's next show.
