Sony has just released its Dual Layered DVD burner and Verbatim has finally released its DVD-9 media (which is an arm and a leg, I might add).
I have heard of other users making 1:1 copies of superbit DVD movies using Nero's burning software, but has anyone yet tried to make an exact duplicate of an Xbox game? Seeing as the media is the same, finally, I don't see why a PC couldn't copy a game bit for bit.
And if no one's tried it yet, I might just be the first.

Well that was the first thing I thought of too. With PS2 games u can make exact 1:1 copies of DVD games, and as long as u have a chip or the slide card/flip top with swap magic disks, the backup works.
Apparently the only way to copy xbox games, is to hook up the xbox to the PC, then using FlashFXP take the files off the D: on the xbox and onto the PC HD, make an image and then burn it to disk.
Bit of hard work compared to PS2 backing up I must say.

Its not about the media re backupping xbox games, its about the way theyre made
Listen to Darth, he speaketh the truth!
Its actually not hard to backup an xbox game, just takes a while longer.
Its good really, cos you can mess with the files, and remove cruddy music, take out movies, do game patching etc. Plus FTPing to an xbox has other advantages too, ie uploading emulators to where you want them , making your own dash skins and uploading them, uploading bios to flash from evox etc.
Its fun really! Dont get put off:-)

I understand that the problem with making copies of Xbox games was always the disc - there was no media out there capable of holding the game info. Xbox games are stamped onto dual-layered DVD-9s. Verbatim has just released a burnable version of this format.
For a long time people thought it would be impossible to make a recordable disk in this format because of the fact that the layers are on top of each other. This meant that stamping was the only way to do it.
Now, however, the media is available for use.
Tell me, if a computer reads a 1 and burns a 1, reads a 0 and burns a 0 then what could stop you from making a 1:1 duplicate of these disks? XDuplicator is a very good example of this same concept, just exercised on CD-Rs.
Any thoughts?

Yeah Boogie I love the music part. On all of my games I remove all of the music and insert that cheesy porn music on all games. It's awesome that way!! Boomp...chica...boomp...chicca...

the thing that is stopping us from doing this, is that xbox games are burned backwards...hence only the xbox dvd drives can read them and nothing else, not even new dual layer dvd burners ;)
basically this is the only way we can back them up, ftp files, create iso, burn...or just use other features in pc apps but lets not go into them ;)

plus, egg turns his xbox into a blowup doll while hes playing his xbox pron audio files hehe
...hmm not a bad idea
back to the point, ahem
theres really no point in getting a dual layered dvr, the units and discs cost an arm and a leg, and for movies, just take out menus and credits, for xbox games 90% of games will fit on a dvdr

XBox games are NOT burned backwards,
First, they are STAMPED, not burned.
Second, the Xbox drives can only be used in a Xbox (unless you are EXTREMELY smart when it comes to firmware hacking) the firmware in an XBox drive makes it so it can read the original disks, there is a way to make a PC drive so it can read Xbox disks and still function but, its EXTREMELY complex and ruins most drives that it is attempted on.

Even if something was burned backwards, a raw copy of it would give you an exact duplicate - as mentioned before, the disks are stamped anyway.
Something else that's odd, my Mac recognizes the Xbox disk as a DVD. Doubt it could anything productive with it, however :p

egg, answer to your q "where have I been" well Ive actually been testing the theory that xbox dvd drives can only be used on an xbox, well I actually put one on a lead and took it for a walk, so It dispelled that idea, so they can ALSO be used on a $4.99 leash from walmart!
btw, firmware hacking isnt hard, just can be a pain in the ass sometimes.
eggs dvd burner goes that quick now, that his backups burn before he puts the disc in

Even if you do a RAW copy, your PC still has to read the disc sector by sector and the sectors on XBox discs are not the same as those of a PC CD/DVD-ROM. PC's could always read dual-layered dics. Try putting your XBox disc in a PC DVD-ROM drive and make an image of it. The fact that dual-layer burners are out does not change the fact that the disc cannot be read in a PC. The capacity was never an issue with backing up XBox game discs.

Technically, it is possible to burn a BIT for BIT copy of an Xbox game, however it is illegal. None of the burning hardware companies are permitted to create burners of this caliber due to possible (or probable) copyright infringements. These companies must conform to the rules and regulations, or risk lawsuits. As for copying the games using a PC... the file system used on an Xbox DVD is not the same as used in windows or unix. It is XFS. Xbox File System. The PC cannot read these files and therefore cannot copy them. A DVD duplicator MAY do the trick but they are costly and I have yet to try this option. JUST BECAUSE THE GAMES ARE STAMPED ON 9GB MEDIA DOESN'T MEAN THE GAME IS 9GB. You could still copy most games onto a 4.7GB DVD. People with mod chips do this all the time!
As for copying xbox games from the D: drive in the box... you need a mod chip. This allows you to FTP to the box and copy the games, HOWEVER, you still need a mod chip to play the games. No mod, no play. I must warn anyone who wishes to follow this procedure, for I have done it, and it worked GREAT for a while, then all of a sudden, in the middle of watching Family Guy with XBMP, the box CAUGHT ON FIRE! No kidding. I have pics to prove it. XBIT MOD CHIP
This post should cover any questions any of you have. I wish more people knew what they were talking about
