Compress all but one Title

Hey,
I'm tring to backup a disc that contains both a wide and fullscreen version of the film. I don't need the fullscreen version, but I'd like to keep the extras and menus and such. Without the extra title (the fullscreen title) the disc is about 4.7 GB, so I need to compress it a little, but how can I remove just the one title and keep everything else intact?

DSnutz, you could try applying "Still-Pictures" to the full-screen title, as well as removing all its audio/subpicture streams. ;)

DSnutz, my suggestion was for you to try DVD Shrink (it's free, user-friendly, and yelds good results).
Its default mode - "Full-Disc" - enables you to keep the original DVD structure intact, including functionning menus.
Each title - movie, extras, menus - can be compressed individually, and their audio tracks and subtitles deleted.
The compression settings are:
- "No Compression": this will leave the video stream untouched.
- "Automatic": DVD Shrink will try and allocate the optimum compression/quality ratio for each title.
- "Custom Ratio": this enables you to manually set the level of compression to be applied to a title.
- "Still Pictures": this is the highest level of compression, making a title about 15% of its original size.
However, it will play like a slide-show and be hardly watchable.
So, using "Still Pictures" on the full-screen title and, deselecting all its audio/subpicture streams, should make it quite small in size, freeing quite a lot of space for the widescreen title.
More quality can also be achieved by raising the compression on the extras, using "Custom Ratio".
For the best quality I'd recommend making a movie-only backup though.

I'm affraid the beta versions are not for public release.
v3.2 Final should be available in less than a week though. ;)

Thanks very much for the tip! Not over my head at all - I'd just never heard of that other program, just been using DVD2One. But DVD Shrink is real nice! I like the options. Now I can keep the movies looking nicer but still keep the extras in low quality - PERFECT. Thanks, guys.

I'm not sure it's on the same subject, but it feels close...
If I want to back up a long movie and lots of extras - can I use Shrink to back up the movie only to one disc and the extras to another, or must I include the main title always?
If you can't be smart - at least be friendly...

Yes, you can easily do it:
- Use DVD Shrink "Re-author" mode to make a movie-only backup.
...and...
- Use DVD Shrink "Re-author" mode to make a compilation of the extras
...or..
- Use the "Full-disc" mode (DVD Shrink default one), apply "Still Pictures" to the movie-title and delete all its audio/subpicture streams.
Using the last option, you might still have to compress the extras a bit, but you will be able to keep functionning menus ("Re-author" does not allow for functionning menus).

Is it true the Nero Recode would allow me to do the same - to ""Re-author" and still keep the menu?

Yes, exactly. You can also remove the audio/subpicture streams from them, to gain even more space.
Compressing the menus might be worth doing when they are fairly big in size.
Most of the time it's not though, as the gain would be minimal. ;)
Nero Recode equivalent to DVD Shrink "Re-author" mode does not allow for functionning menus either.
However, in its equivalent to "Full disc" mode, "deleting" a title gives you the option to replace it by one still image, thus saving more space than when using "Still Pictures".
Keep in mind this image will stay on screen for the duration of the original title (unless you use the skip or fast-forward button, obviously).
Also, the amount of space saved will vary depending on your choice of image - a blank image will save more space than a colorful and detailed one.

Just to make sure - this way I'll be left with functioning menu, right?
By the way - how low of a compression rate do you use? Do you go bellow 75%? At which point the "naked eye" can see the difference?
If you can't be smart - at least be friendly...

Yes, functioning menus, sorry for my spelling. ;)
I very rarely go below 75%, but with v3.2 (publicly available soon), I might do it more often.
What your naked eye find acceptable might not be what mine does.
The quality of a backup depends highly on the quality/bitrate of the original.
The "perceived" quality depends highly on the quality/size/type of the viewing equipment (TV, HDTV, Plasma screen, LCD screen, DVD Player, etc etc), and your eyesight.
The choice can only be made by you, so I suggest you conduct a few tests, using DVD-R(W).
