Lots of reading on this great site and others has left me confused about which video capture device to purchase. Please lend your knowledge. Goals: a) capture analog (Hi8 and VHS) and miniDV video clips to use in authoring DVDs to use for workshops we give. The video clips will be interspersed with PowerPoint slides; and b) save 20 years of family VHS tapes to DVD. In both situations, we want to be able to edit the material, preferably after capturing it to the hard drive or at least to a DVD. From what I've read, it may be impossible to edit material captured by the Plextor M402U after the fact. It may be possible to edit post-capture with the Canopus ADVC-100, and it will also export video back to analog. Both rigs seem to be able to utilize PAL + NTSC (which might become important since we have some clients in Europe). On the other hand, Plextor can convert to DivX and multiple MPEG formats; is much less expensive; and may be more easily compatible with our Plextor 712A DVD writer. (And if I understand it correctly, the Canopus - which gets rave reviews on every site - would also require that we install a Firewire card (we have USB 2.0). So, I would prefer to go with Plextor if one can edit the videos after capture, and if the transforms it produces are of equal quality. BTW, the system is a Dell 4600 running @ 2.4, 512 RAM, 40Gig HD, Nvidia GeForce. Kudos to anyone who knows about all of this and will help out! Dave M
