My opinion on the guide:

http://www.afterdawn.com/articles/archive/dvd2vcd_with_smart_dvd2avi_tmpgenc.cfm

It says:

??.. In this guide, we downmix the audio to 44.1kHz because most of the soundcards don't handle 48kHz very well and we want to create PC compatible VCD as well. ?

?? Now, still from Audio menu, select 48 -> 44.1 and choose High or UltraHigh. After this, go to Dolby Digital menu and select Decode and Dolby Surround Downmix. ?

I think you should not do this. If you ask dvd2avi to downmix (should this not be DOWNSAMPLE?) audio from 48 to 44.1 it will take hours to complete the action while if you do not do this it will take only minutes.

This action is taken anyhow by tmpgenc and the compiling time in the latter program does not change if you do the downsampling in dvd2vcd or not. I do not see any difference in the final mpeg produced by tmpgenc.

Again the guide says:

?Hit F5 and DVD2AVI starts previewing the movie. Just let it run for few seconds -- you should see a statistics box to appear next to the main window and information should appear in the boxes soon after this. After you see text in most of the boxes, click Esc in order to stop the previewing. Now, write these things down to a paper: Video type (PAL, FILM or NTSC), Frame type (progressive, interlaced, etc), Aspect ratio (16:9 or 4:3) and Frame rate (29.97fps for NTSC, 25fps for PAL and 24fps for NTSCFilm). ?

do not rely on this information too much. I have had cases where this information was wrong. Instead do a preview in tmpgenc and decide there if your parameters are correct.

I hope this will help and if I am wrong please tell me.

Happy ripping etc.

For the audio part:

Actually, the process that takes hours is NOT the 48 to 44.1kHz conversion, but downsampling 5.1 AC3 audio into 2-channel stereo audio. The 48->44.1 conversion only adds slightly more time over this.

The guide is rather old and I have these fixes coming to it:

-correct way to determine FILM/NTSC, interlace/progressive
-correct way to select which audio track should be used for audio extraction (preferring DS2.0 instead of DS5.1 since this is _already downmixed by studio_) -- including the analysis of SmartRipper's log files and such
-to use SSRC and tooLame as external audio frequency conversion tool/encoder in TMPGEnc (this has been done already in our SVCD guide)
