If my PS2 has a mod-chip installed, can I take it out and install a new one without problems??

Sorry if I screwed it up, but I'm a newbie in modding. Thanks in advance!!.

Of course I know how to install the chip, but I heard that the chip can't be replaced because the old chip modifies something on the console therefore another chip will not work on it.
