Flip-tops and slide cards suck ass! My experience with these have been anything but pleasant. Neither versions 2 or 3 work reliably on my V.7 PS2. After exhausting every possible option and taking the advice of others, the stupid swap method still will not work! I have tried different recording speeds, burn software, loaders, and media--none of these will work! So, I have finally decided to have a mod chip installed. Can somebody recommend a reputable mod chip installer? I have never touched a sodering iron before, and I do not want to make a rookie mistake of damaging my ps2. I appreciate the help

this is fourth time i have seen this posted somewhere. just because you couldn't figure it out, doesn't mean they suck. I have never had a game that i couldn't get to work with my fliptop.

Fantastic! I am happy that you had success with Swap Magic. I only wish I had the luck you and other successful users of Swap Magic possess. My results were frustrating and just downright miserable. This is just my opinion, and my point of view does not reflect the opinions of others.
If you can successfully boot a copy of a game via Swap Magic, consider yourself blessed.

i hope that when you do get a modchip, you don't find out it was your ps2 all the long that wouldn't read backups, that would suck.

Mr. Sly, you raise a very interesting point. What do you suppose the problem with my PS2 may be? I wonder what--if anyting--is making my Swap Magic not work? It plays everything else fine: my original ps1 and PS2 games work flawlessly. I am almost positive that a mod chip will perform well on my system. Also, I have talked with others who experience the same problem with Swap Magic. Your input will be appreciated.

i had a v4 and swap magic worked for about 6 months, then it stopped reading the swap magic dvd. it would read everything else. I figured the laser was just getting weak, so i sold it and bought a new v9. Everything works perfectly now. Do backup dvd movies work on your ps2?

Yes, I have DVD X copy, and it plays all of my back-up movies with no problems--it even plays vcd's too.

Yes, after I insert Swap Magic V2 the boot screen displays the message, "insert disk". I then insert a copy of my game (Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 in this case), and the screen goes blue. Ordinarily, this would mean that my boot was a success; however, the loading screen is displayed followed by the game developer's five second movie clip. After the mentioned is finished loading, the screen turns black; the game's main menu will not load. I have tried switching to all kinds of media such as, verbatim, Memorex, and Imation just to name a few. I also downloaded Oslfan's version of Swap Magic 3 (http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/77340/473607-120268). I have downloaded and burned numerous boot disks with no luck. It seems that my PS2 has a stubborn mind and refuses to cooperate.

To access Olsfan's "Swap Magic 3", please go to the first page of url in my previous reply. It is the very first post there.

that is really weird that the game loads up, then quits. I don't have an answer for that. As you said, maybe your ps2 is stubborn. But i don't know if a mod chip will solve your problem or not.

I have never found the fliptops to be much trouble. I have installed them on my own PS2 and my niece's, both v2's, and a friends v7 and v9. All have worked perfectly for over a year now since the installation. The swapping is just a minor hassle to me. I also get the added bonus of being able to play my backups online which you can't do with a modded console.

Xian, do you use a DVD or CD loader? Or, do you just use the Swap Magic CD itself? Is there any additional software you use?

There is a few games that you need to use the CD Loader on, but as far as the ones I play only Ratchet and Clank 2 and Whiplash require it. Any of the others on http://www.swapmagicfix.com that are listed aren't games I own except those two, and most of them I am not interested in anyway.

I have accessed several groups and read numerous threads regarding the flip-top/swap disk method. All of the posts I referenced had successful and unsuccessful results. In addition, those who had success reported inconsistant results: it works sometimes with certain games and/or it does not work at all.
Being user friendly in its simplicity and cost effective in the initial cost, Swap Magic's method of playing copies appears to be the ideal choice in playing back-ups for those who lack mechanincal skills. However, the end result is not reliable enough to fully enjoy the piece of mind in playing your back-ups. The possibility of your system freezing resulting in a black screen is likely. Mod chips have been met with some incomsistant results as well, but not enough to make me skeptical of their performance.
When referencing posts by those who did have problems getting their mod chip to work, the same user would normally reply to the same post stating that he or she was at fault for wiring or sodering the chip incorrectly. Later on, the same person added that their copies played flawlessly after the chip was installed correctly.
My personal opinion has been influenced with the frustration of many unsuccessful attempts at the swap method. Supplemental, I found that many share my point of view. Those who approve of the swap method often experience some difficulties in getting their system to work at 100%. And, if installed correctly, the mod chip appears to be a full-proof method of playing your personal copies with ease.

I initially payed $30.00 for the two Swap Magic disks and the slide card--I also payed $20.00 for the flip-top case. With the same $50.00 I foolishly invested in Swap Magic I could have purchased a mod chip such as the Messiah, DMS3, or Matrix Infinity. After spending an addtional $50.00 I could have had it professionally installed. The error of my ways is a costly lesson learned. I only wish I had known about the mod chip method sooner, and I wish I knew that professional installation was available. After I accumulate the extra funds, I am sending my PS2 off to get modded ASAP.
