Mod-chip
Pros
-Boots directly, just put up your CDR/DVDR and it will boot-up,no need to swap. Some of them even have support for PSX backups and/or MultiRegion DVD
-Has more compatibility than swap method
Cons
-Voids your warrantly, if you have a new nifty model, go on, but if you have a v1-3 model, and you ever get a Disc Read Error, dont ever expect SONY to repair your PS2.
-Requires solder skills
If you don't have those, you'll have to pay for installation, and prices may vary depending on your location. Seriously, dont try it yourself if you dont have your skills, you'll end up *****ng up your console :(
Swap Magic/Another Bootdisk and Slide tool
Pros
-Cheapest option available
-Doesnt void your warranty
Cons
-Swapping is a bit of a hassle, specially with some problematic games that require CDLoader or TOC Refresh, thus, needing about 2 or 3 swaps before being able to play.
-Even with fixes, compatibility is not as high as that of the mod-chip, so dont buy it and expect to be able to play EACH AND EVERY AVAILABLE PS2 GAME.
-You'll need a boot disc for CDs, another one for DVDs, and optionally, one for PSX backups and one for DVD movies (multi-regions), thats a lot of disks... (altough, Swap Magic does include the first two).
In my oppinion, if you have an old model, go with SwapMagic, I've heard a mod-chip is harder to install on those models anyway and not worthy, since the laser is not very good.
If you have a spiffy new model like v4-9, mod-chip is the way to go, as long as you have money to spend and the neccesary skills (or know someone who can install it), but remember it will void your warranty. If you are a bit paranoid and dont want to void your warranty, use swap magic instead, and switch to mod-chip once your warranty ends.
