Can someone please help me here? I'm trying to put a bunch of old roms into a DVD+R disc but when I try it with Nero it's saying the disc is not supported. Can you make data discs with DVD+R's? I don't know what to do, should they be formatted or something? Please respond with any suggestions!

What drive do you have? Not all drives support DVD+R!
To determine the make and model as well as a host of information about your optical drives, a free program called InfoTools can do the trick. Start it up and under the Drive tab, it will list all the relevant specifications and capabilities of your burner. The actual name of your burner is listed in the drop-down box at the top (those numbers before the name of your burner are important too!). You can get InfoTools from http://www.cd-rw.org/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/nero_info_tool.cfm

Ok, my drive says Sony DVD RW DRU-510A. Most of the options are checked under supported write and read. shouldn't it work then? is there something else that has to be done, like maybe these discs need to be formatted or something? I've also used these DVD+R discs to burn a dvd-r, so that means my drive must support them right? i just can't get them to work as data files.

Which version of nero are you using ? In Nero Tool Kit , you should be able to see if your burner is being recognized.

I would hope Sony drives support DVD+R since Sony is a major support of it! Does Nero InfoTools say there is support for DVD+R though? :)

WOW i thought so too consdiering SOny is the big player in the DVD+R consortium or whatever you call it. In either case, since the drive doesnt support DVD+R, you can look for a firmware hack (dont hold your breath). Odds are however you will have to use DVD-R (yay! :P)
For various firmwares pay a visit to http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php

That particular model of Sony DOES support DVD+R !
http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru510adwn.htm
** Note : There are patches there for WindowsXP and a new firmware.
1)Verify that you have the back jumper in the right slot
2)Check your ASPI
3)You didnt say which version of NERO you had ! --
4)Uninstall completely Nero and re-install after a reboot.

Does it matter? (as long as the app recognizes the drive and considering the 510 is not bleeding edge, there's no reason it shouldnt recognize it)

I dont follow Sony drives much... which ones dont? (or if need by, officially dont)

1)Earlier version of Nero (5.215 and before) had inherent bugs with some Sony CD-Writer
2)The DRU-500 does not -- as a matter of fact the DRU-510A is one of the first Dual Drive put out by Sony in September 03'.

My Nero version is 6.3.0.2. I went into Nero burning rom and then clicked on about Nero, so I hope I did this right. sorry i'm a newbie to all this. But in InfoTools CDR+R was not checked, so I guess that means it's not supported right?

There are a lot of threads on this forum explaining just that ! I picked one at random using the Little Search Box on top of this page -- !!
Thanks to Praetor (Moderator on this forum)-- you will find a complete bundle where you are thought how to do this.

Ok I updated to the latest ASPI drivers and it still didn't solve my problem. Am I suppose to go into test drive and then Create data disc under Run Test? I tried doing that and it put a bunch of files on the disc.

When I first put a disc in after opening, it wasn't even recognized when I went to my dvdrom. like it didn't show the capacity or anything like that.

When I put a blank in it reads 0 free 0 used. Have you tried burning anything onto it?

Well you have a +R compatibility issue with your drive which doesnt affect the -R capabilities

Hi Amoretto,
I would recommend doing some basic checks first.
First upgrade to the latest Nero 6.3.1.17 from Nero's website if you have not already. This could resolve a number of issues.
Then place a DVD+R disc in your Recorder; launch the Nero StartSmart and click on the bottom left button to go into Expert mode. (Expert Mode text will show up in the bottom rigth of window when you are in this mode). Then go to Exra's and select Disc Info. This will cause the recorder to detect what type of media you have in the recorder. If its able to detect the DVD+R media, and report its capacity, then you should be able to burn to the DVD+R media.
Now make sure you have the DVD Tab selected in the Top Right of the Nero StartSmart window, if you have the CD tab selected this could explain your problems.
And now try and do a burn. If it fails, to detect the media still, then it could be caused by the following issues:
a) Old firmware on the Recorder. Go to Sony's website and upgrade the firmware for your model recorder.
b) Poor media, or new DVD+R media. The Recorders firmware contains Read and Write strategies for all the Major brands of Media. The Media MFG's provide these specs to the Recorder MFG's to implement into their firmware. A new brand of media would not be properly detected, and a Generic read and write strategy would be used, which could cause poor writes or the recorder not to be able to detect the media. The upgraded firmware could have resolved this, if not, try another brand of DVD+R media.
c) Driver conflicts from other Recording programs. YOu can use Nero InfoTool to see what SOFTWARE programs are installed on your system. It will list the Nero software, and any other CD/DVD Recording software that you ahve installed on your system. (This tool is located under the Nero StartSmart, under Extras, and labled 'Get System Info'.
Regards,
Craig

OK, I went out and bought DVD-R discs and they seem to be working ok. I already burned a data disc and viewed them through my computer, but my disc capacity still isn't listed. Also, aren't these discs like 4.7 GB? I only have 1.87 GB taken up and i'm trying to write to the same disc and it's saying there isn't enough space. Also, should I use multisession when I burn them?

You need to use tools like our 'Disc Info' to properly read the capacity of the Recordable media. Windows Explorer can not do this.
And as suggested by others, use Multisession if you wish to write to the disc more than once. Unless you have RW media, which you can erase and and start with a fresh blank disc.

Craig
