I wanted to make a little music video and use scenes from the Matrix movies. I have an ATI-All-Wonder video card and connected my set-up DVD player to the video input port. I searched the DVD to the scene where I wanted to capture, and pressed record on my ATI capture window, saving the clip as an mpg on my hard drive. When I played the mpg file, the playback is all scrambled. (actually, it takes a second of footage and just loops it over and over for the duration of the clip)

Anyone know why it does this? Some type of encryption? Because I tried capturing the documentary from the Special features section and that played fine as an mpg.

Is there any free software that can capture scenes from a DVD? I don't want to go through the entire ripping process if all I need is a 10 second scene from the entire movie. Any suggestions?

Hi,

The scrambling your seeing is the result of the copy protection on copyrighted DVDs. Try running DVD43 1.4 (free) or AnyDVD in the background while you capture your clips. They both bypass the encryption while they're running :)

Here's a link to DVD43:

You'll also need to install patin-coffin for DVD43 to run:

It is very easy to use Xilisoft DVD Ripper. What you need to do is to click the "Encode Segment" option in File menu. For details, look at http://www.xilisoft.com

@Pireaa,

Do you work for Xilisoft? Every post I've seen you make simply pimps the software and nothing more. If you want to advertise then support this site and buy ad space otherwise why don't you actually try helping some people.

Indeed cease this indirect advertising or you'll find your stay here quite short.

So can I assume that with AnyDVD and/or DVD43 I can rip film clips from a copyrighted DVD from a DVD drive in my PC or can it only be done through plugging in normal DVD drive externally?

Thanks,

You are correct. You need only one - DVD43 is free and performs decent enough whereas AnyDVD give outstanding performance but costs $40.
