I have an .mkv file that's proving dificult to open. i've installed various things that i've been told should open the file including matroska packs, matroska splitter and AVIsynth but alas none of these programs are idiot friendly. i'm fairly new to all this and would appreciate it if someone could give me a brief step by step guide to opening my .mkv using any of the aformentioned programs. thanks :0)

I am not a crook.

Let me guess ..... the file name is stating 'RV9' or 'RV10' somewhere ?
