Help converting AVI movie to DVD-R

Hi, I am very new to this as the title reads so be gentle! I've been trying to burn a movie to DVD-R that I downloaded so that I can view it on my Sony SLV D300p DVD player and have had no luck. What I've done so far is:
-Followed the guide titled "Convert a DivX or XviD AVI to DVD" (the file was a DIVX movie that looks like it was converted to an avi)
-Used TMPGEnc for encoding, AVIcodec to determine the audio and video codecs
-Used IFOEdit for the authoring
and finally downloaded and used Nero Buring-ROM for the final burn to DVD-R.
The dvd player does say it will play DVD-R disks so I'm lost as to what to do!!! Help!
