A friend of mine who thinks he knows everything says that there is a way for the the gov. to find out if you are illegally copying movies. Is this true?

the only thing they could know is if you uploaded it to the FastTrack network (KaZaA, any version) but, it would take them a bit to see it and they probably wouldn't catch you.

I knew that he was (my friend) full of it. I'm just checking since I'm a newbie at it and I knew it would be very difficult prove it.

No the aliens are in New York. Just watch Men in Black.
They could give you a worm that out puts your file activity and list off any known programs that might include DVD ripping. So yes it is possible. However it is extremely unlikely. As even if there were and even if they had a computer running analysis of every person. So find and get a person would take years. Then the only people they could go after would be americans, but by adding a worm to list off computer activity is illigal. So you could sue them for lack of privacy.
SO I would say you can take that aluminum foil hat off and stop worring. As any thing is possible, but just think if its practical.

That was good, I will have to wait untill your not looking then get your brain waves Vurbal.

But if you really want to be paranoid, the FBI could strike a deal with Microsoft. In an update (critical security update) include the bug. Then when ever you access the internet it could send a report of programs run and keystrokes. Then it wouldn`t be illegal as you have to agree to the release every time you load windows software so they would have your permission. Who reads those things anyways.
Then they could have a supercomputer set to look for file orders of a particular DVD title. That could limit the list down and time to about a month.

I am scarring anyone yet.

Hey Guys,

you are all having a laff, talking about "The Man" being able to spy on you etc. etc.

Try this out:

Look under "Add/Remove Programs"

Do you have a windows update or hotfix that has the number KB828741 (the number is important)???

If you DO have that installed, you may already have the code installed that reports you to the authorities.

If you DO have that installed, use a Hex editor and have a look at VTS_01_1.VOB for any film you have ripped (look at the COPIED VOB).

You are looking for a 64 byte sequence starting at offset 000501
it will be in the form:
000500 DDC0000A E1800007 98800006 E6800006
000510 31800005 99800004 F9800004 65800003
000520 C6800003 01800002 51800001 A3800001
000530 2D800000 D3800000 8C800000 46800000
000540 00800000 463FFFFF FF3FFFFF FF3FFFFF

What you have to look out for is the marker sequence of 80 in the second byte position of each block.

If that exists, then the byte 1 positions & the byte 4 positions of each of the 14 blocks holds an encrypted number identifying the film.

As the reporting software is a part of Windows, it normally is trusted to pass out through the firewall without question....

Scary thought, Eh!!!!

Maybe you SHOULD be wearing an AFDB:

Hahaha...

Just joking !LOL!

The Man would never do anything like that, would he!!

Byeeee..

One more question. If I delete the stored movie file, will still store those codes that DRCHIP is writing about? Man, I'm really getting paranoid.....

I deleted KB828741 in my file. It seems that it is all related to videos/picture programs.

Oh My $DEITY,

It was a "JOKE"....
Please DON'T go deleting stuff willy-nilly

You will find that structure in ALL VTS_01_1.VOB files ;-O

Look up KB828741 on Microsoft's KnowledgeBase....

Is that why my computer is not working 100%. Damn, I thought that the tittle "senior member" under people's name can be trusted.

I will have to watch out from now on. Minor bullshit but lesson learned from this newbie.

Hiya,

A little bit of advice for ya..

You will read a LOT of posts on just about every forum that are just plain guff, with no basis in fact/science/logic etc....

ALWAYS treat any "advice" (including this !LOL!) with a healthy dose of suspicion.

Read up on the "advice" offered.

NEVER follow "advice" BLINDLY.

If it sounds like common sense & logical, then INVESTIGATE FIRST (Google is your friend).

If it sounds "too good to be true", then it probably is.

Don't be too trusting, try to avoid the "victim mentality", the net is a dangerous place and the onus is on YOU to keep YOURSELF safe.

If you rely on others to protect you from yourself/the big-bad-world, then you are fated for a world of hurt...

Some examples of "Yeah, right!" memes floating around:

Heat Flares on DVD's causing errors.
Cheap'n'Nasty/No-Name media is just as good as Expensive/Big-Name media.
A $59 DVD-Writer is just as good as a $129 DVD-Writer.
Cheaper is better coz you can afford some coasters when it is "that cheap".
JoeRandomLuser uses a Re-Brand, No-Name burner with cheap/no-name media & he has burned "hundreds" of copies with "NO ERRORS", and has been doing it for "years" - therefore he is doing it "right" and everyone else is "wrong".
ASPI is the cure-all for everything.
Flashing your drive is a cure-all for everything, and will magically let you write at 24x, will write dual-layer etc. etc.

You can be sure of one thing, "The Man" IS constantly trying to monitor/control, that is his whole reason for existance.

So, be suspicious, be safe, and don't rely on the fact that you are one of the "little people" and are anonymous/insignificant to protect you..

Try to keep under the radar....

By the way, in my ORIGINAL POST, I did say I was joking!!

etc. etc. etc.

Hope you have not been too upset..

Have Fun...

Gotcha!!!

Don't feel bad.

I've been reading stuff about ripping speed solutions on this site and all so far do not work. It might work for them but not for my computer.

You say your joking but I believe that there is some truth to what you said. Just need to be careful.

One last thing, I started using GQ DVD media (cheap if on sale at FRY's Electronics) and so far no errors.

IF IT IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT MUST BE BULLSHIT...

The only GUARANTEED way is a fast DVD-ROM drive on its own channel (ASPI not needed, as Windows 2000 & XP use SPTI - flashing writer firmware etc is not as efficient as a dedicated ROM device).
