Hi, I am a little new to the dvd thing, but I've got a basic understanding of the structure and such. So, I'm considering exploring the world of downloading Movies to be burned a DVDR (legally of course) but I've got some questions first. I realize there are many different formats to be downloaded, like AVI, DIVX, SVCD, VCD etc. However, I also know that to author an actual DVD, you use the files like VTS_01_1.VOB and such. I'm affraid that by starting with say, an AVI file, I might lose a lot of quality converting it to be burned to a dvd. Basically, I'm looking for the low-down on what files to download or obtain any other way (legally) in order to author the best possible DVDR I can. Thnks for any help or pointing in the right direction you can give.

There are some movie download legal sites but nothing major yet! And as soon as the major ones come along (like iTunes for music) they'll probably have so much protection re-encoding them will be impossible lol

Thanks and you're probably right. I'd still like to know the answers to those questions though if someone could answer them or point me where to go. I'm still curious about the quality difference between converting AVIs and using the VOB files etc. Every source i check seems more concerned with the buring process rather than the file selection.

Jason.

An AVI might look OK, but if VOB's are involved you are usually going to get better quality and much larger file size. A downloaded AVI movie could be 750MB, while the VOB's from the original might be 4G.

It sort of depends on the encoder. Converting one format to the other is called Encoding, there are loads of encoders availible. Most favous are TMPGEnc, MainConcept, Canopus ProCoder and CCE SP. CCE SP is the dearest but best quality, u can get a copy of CCE Basic for about $60 with similar quality to CCE SP.
