Hiya, after following the great guides in this site I have become quite adept at converting .avi files to DVD, but I have some .avi files that stump me - wonder if anyone can help!?

I have a normal .avi file that plays well on pc.
I do the usual conversion in TMPGenc, using (as guides suggest) NTSC, 2-pass VBR, I use highest quality (slow), I reduce the file size to fit on a disk etc etc - all as normal, but the finished product has no audio when authored. I have checked the audio file after conversion in TMPGenc, and it was blank, but the correct size etc. So by matter of deduction, TMPGenc has lost the audio.

It is not an AC3 format - avicodec says...
File : 699 MB (699 MB), duration: 1:42:42, type: AVI, 1 audio stream(s), quality: 48 %
Video : 605 MB, 823 Kbps, 23.976 fps, 640*272 (2.21:1), XVID = XVID Mpeg-4, Supported
Audio : 94 MB, 128 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, 0x55 = MPEG Layer-3, Supported

I thought I'd open the .avi in VirtualDub to demux the video and audio, but it claims there will be a skew in the audio and I should decompress the audio seperately into a .wav file then recompress.

I guess I'm asking - how do I do that?? Is there a guide anywhere? The only guide I have found in Afterdawn is regarding a VCD to DVD, but not the original .avi file.

Please help - after hours of banging my head against the wall trying different things, its starting to hurt!

Cheers in advance

OR would appreciate how to shrink the .AVI to fit on a cd-r (VCD). As you can see by the above, VirtualDub Mod will knock the audio out of sync, so I cant split the .AVI or cut it up. (been searching through postings for hours, no luck)

I just always select the MPEG-1 Layer II Audio [MP2] options in TMPGEnc. This makes a single .mpg file that contains both the audio and video. When it is done encoding it is easy to play that single file in a software DVD player and check that both the audio and video are correct and in sync. Then I use that .mpg file in TMPGEnc DVD Author. I have never had a problem with the audio when done this way.
