Just wonder if other people have other procedures for identifing a bad spindle of DVD media than the one I describe below.

My technique is to backup two different videos on the first two disks from the batch. Obviously, if neither will even play, you've got a bad batch. If they both play but have the same pattern of pixellation, skipping, or just stopping, and at about the same running time points into the movie, then this also is indicative of a bad batch.

I also do what I call a "light" test on these first two burned DVDs. What this entails is examing the burned side of the disk in a dark room under a strong florescent reading lamp. Slowly rotating the disk at a certain angle (discovered through trial and error), you can see if the burned dye is evenly colored over the whole disk surface. If you don't see anything unusual, that means it's a good batch. However, if you see a few elongated oval blotches that have the same pattern and position on both disks, and that are darker than the rest of the surface, you may have a problem. I've found about 50% of the time, these disks will pixellate and skip; the other 50% of the time, especially if the blotches are small and/or very faint, the DVDs will play just fine. This "light" test is kind of a subjective thing.

I follow a more simple procedure... ;)

If we are talking about really important data backup, you have to buy a high quality disc (e.g. TY, original Ritek G04, Verbatim, etc...).

This will ensure that the disc has an high quality in every aspect (dye, manufacturing process, quality control etc.) and is very difficult to get a bad batch of discs on these brands.

Then all you have to do is have a look for any accidental scratches or blemishes (very unlikely), and then buuurrrnnn!
