Hi, I just picked up the NEC ND-2510A Double Layer 8X Beige DVD+/-RW Drive, and when I try to make a backup of a DVD it takes over two hours to just make the disc image (over 3 hours total, burn time included). Alot of people I have talked to say that the process for them takes usually no more then an hour.
Being home from school, I have the burner in and old P3 500 (400 mb ram), and a 5200 seagate 20 gig drive. I have tried multiple burning applications (dvdshirnk ero, DVD-X Copy, Copy to DVD) and they all have taken about the same ammount of time. Is it my old machine thats slowing this process up? Or am I missing something? Thanks.
Your slow system specs will definitely cause lag during the encoding process which is very CPU intensive. You have a decent enough amount of RAM although I imagine it's a bit on the slow side as well.
I believe your long rip times are partially due to the fact that most DVD burners are capped to a 2X read speed for DVD videos so that equates to about an hour or so for the rip. Since your rips are taking quite a bit longer (and the burns as well) the burner may be set to PIO trnsfer mode which is very slow. The burner should be set to DMA for best performance. Here's a link to help you sort out the PIO/DMA issue:

I have a p3 gateway w/ 384mb ram, when using Shrink and deep analysis ... the process is around 3 hours, start to finish. On my dell it's around 45-60 min.

I also have very slow ripping speeds. I use my Pioneer DVD 115 player to rip them and they take about 2 & 1/2 hours to rip also. My PC is a Gateway P4 1.5ghz with 512MB ram, and a 7200 250GB Maxtor HD (that I'm ripping the dvds to). My PC should be fine for ripping right? I'm going to try that link you suggested, but any suggestions besides that? Thanks.
Your Pioneer ROM should be ripping DVDs in about 15 - 20 minutes depending on the length of the film. My first suggestion would be to check out the link I gave up above and if that doesn't help come back with more specifics such as more detailed system specs, OS and all software being used :)

Nephilim, I followed the instructions on the link you have and it still takes about 1 & 1/2 hours to rip a DVD (on my Pioneer DVD115 drive). Much better then before, but still longer then it should.
I tried ripping a DVD on my Plextor 708A burner and that seemed to preform much better then the Pioneer drive. I have no clue why, but this one does it under an hour, on average for about 45 min or so. Much more doable then 2 & 1/2 hours. I can live with that. =)
