HD Loader Mode Question

When first hit select i got the menu showing mode 1,2,3. I had 1 enabled for some reason. Then I tried to follow the instruction on the ps2nfo.com site. I cant seem to disable 1 or enable any of the others. Sometimes my HD Loader will freeze when I hit select. I am trying to make to put on NCAA Football 2005, and it needs to be on mode 3............And if i get this to work, will it solve my constant rattling and momentary freezing I get when trying to run this game.....? thanks
