Sony: PS4 will have stronger games lineup at launch than previous generations

article published on 28 April, 2013

The exec did not give a title count but did say developer's strong "familiarity" with the hardware led to the large launch lineup. As revealed, the PS4's architecture will be very similar to the average high-end PC using AMD under the hood. "The launch lineup for ... [ read the full article ]

The video card may be decently powerful but the 1.6Ghz AMD Jaguar core is a low power low performance core similar to the Intel Atom or AMD E-Series processors. 8 weak cores is not better than 4 strong cores. Of course these consoles will be GPU driven more than CPU driven when it comes to the graphics but comparing it to an average high end PC is a joke.

There is that :)

But seriously have you seen an "average high-end PC using AMD under the hood"? The statement depends on what you mean by "average".

I just built for a client a gaming system with 8gigs 2133mhz DDR3 with a massive graphics card that sports 4 gigs of DDR5 on a 256 bit bus. I assure you it's.... quick. Of course it's priced accordingly.

AMD are using modded AIO tech which I'm sure it will be very good Brockie. The power of any console really comes from games being coded specifically for it.

I am still amazed on how many are wowed by the Specs of the PS4... "But it's got 8 cores and 8GB of GDDR5 ram. It is just like my gaming PC"

Uh.. no. It will be a decently powerful console but just like any other console the games will have to be coded specifically to use those specific specs. The only advantage using an x86 processor core is that the porting from the PC versions of those games will be easier to some degree. In the end the PC will still win and since the announced price of the NextBox is $499 and will use a similar AMD APU Core based of Jaguar (or so the rumors say) and neither will have backwards compatibility to their previous generation consoles because of that CPU core switch the PC will look more appealing to many.

Now that HDMI is pretty much standard on any video card and all TVs sold today and in the past few years at least all have HDMI hooking a PC capable of gaming to a TV is easier than ever. I, for one, will be skipping the new consoles from Sony and Microsoft and investing some of the money it would cost for those consoles into my Quad Core HTPC in the form of a gaming video card. Then I do not have to worry about that vendor lock in and the higher cost of the games. The Sony and MS exclusives do not really interest me so I am not going to buy another console just to have two consoles to do the job of one from the same company.
