Microsoft has unveiled a new model of the Surface Pro tablet for Japan. The tablet has 256GB internal storage, a full copy of Office 2013 and of course, Windows 8 Pro. Available June 7th, prices start at 99,000 yen ($990 USD). At 256GB, it will be the largest capacity tablet available from Microsoft. Probably because most people won't pay that much for a tablet. You can get an ultra book at that price with better specs.

You are missing the point. M$ is offering the Surface Pro in Japan with 4x the storage for not much more than the 64 GB model goe for in the US. Furthermore, the 256 GB model simply isn't available here.

I see your point; why them and not us? I can only guess that it's because demand for the Surface tablets is so soft here that they decided to market more heavily in a more gadget loving country. Just my thought. I'm sure if the demand for this model is here, they'll offer it at some point.

M$ might find the demand for the Pro is a bit better, if they offered a version w/o a large percentage of the SSD already pre-gobbled by the OS in the US =p .

Japan would only be a test market.

Users of the MS Surface Pro have reported a good experience if not for the lack of GBs. MS's long term plan foe Win8 has always counted on the price of SS storage space to drop over time.
