Just purchased a DVD that at the moment is only available in full screen format. Watching it, it has that kinda streched vertical look to it! It looks like if I could rip the DVD to the Hard Drive and then squash it a bit it would look better. It wouldn't be true WS but will look better than it is at the moment.

Any way to do this?

Hope you can see what I am (trying) getting at.

I don't know what I am doing.

Bump

Aww come on this has to be possible. Got another DVD today with the same problem (Fecking Reg2).

I have become so used to watching WS that full screen looks wrong. I just wanna kid myself into thinking it's WS. This reminds of some VHS movies I have, they are streched. I used to be able to alter the setting on the TV to squash it.

There has to be a way to fake the WS, crush it down, put the black borders on, due to the strechy look on the DVD it will end up looking better.

I don't know what I am doing.

I must admit I have read this thread many times and have been tempted to scream "For christ sakes why, man?". I can see where you are coming from, and I agree that watching fullscreen movies on a widescreen set is totally lame.

There is a programme called DVDrebuilder that is used in conjuntion with CCE basic. Rebuilder is free but CCE basic costs, about $60. DVD rebuilder has an advanced setting that can "crop" a 4:3 (widescreen) movie & convert to anamorphic. I have not tried this method on a fullscreen movie, and probably would not. It may work for you. Remember though the top and bottom of the picture are obliterated, and may ruin your viewing pleasure. (It would certainly do that for me)

Using this method (rebuilder/cce) is very time consuming. For me usually 5x longer than using a standard transcoding tool. Vurbal has produced an excellent guide on this forum, it does not cover the example I am talking about but will give you an excellent introduction into rebuilder.

Another thing..has your telly got a "smart" stretch mode to "mimic" widescreen?. I use this method when viewing full screen movies, and after half an hour or so I honestly don't notice the distortion.

Looking for my old AD
