O.k., I downloaded a movie that I wanted and after it finished and checked where I had downloaded it, I noticed that the 2 files were in .dat format. What the hell do I do with them?

Are you sure that the downloads are finished?
Make a backup copies of them (not exactly necessary but just for playing safe) and rename the extensions to .AVI or .mpg or what ever they're supposed to be and test wether they play now.

Careful what you post buddy - try to re-word stuff like this or you might get shouted at.

So you have a file with .DAT extension! Only seen that when the file is a bit duff and it hasn't got the correct extension. You will prob find it will not thumbnail under WinXP. Pain in the butt.

Simple way round it - open with/media Player and it should play. Careful if you tell it to remember this cos it will asociate ALL .DAT files with Media Player.

I don't know what I am doing.

Err - Downloading Movies is against the law and the rules of the forum - the moderators will shout. I am not being preachy - just a friendly word :)

Does G-Spot pick it up?

Other than that you could load it into TMPGEnc - set it as PAL and use the source range to rip say 10 mins. See if it plays back fine. If not try again and set it to NTSC and check that.

I don't know what I am doing.

I understand what you are getting at, i'm just wurprised at how long I have been posting and how much more people go into detail than I had in my post not having a problem with my wording until now. I didn't say what movie or go into any detail what so ever. I think through what I say before I post. I appreciate the help very much, but don't appreciate being told that I am breaking any rules or laws. Until I am confronted by a moderator of this site or someone of that stature I am not going to worry about the innocent messages that I post. I apologize if you take offense to my response cause I am not trying to be a jerk, but if you take a look in some of the other sections of the forum you will find much worse topics of discussion. Again, I am not trying to be a jerk and thank you for the advice you had given me. Thank You

No offence taken, don't worry - I noticed your rating was Newbie - I figured this may well have been your first post, and you weren't aware of the rules, didn't want you getting off on the wrong foot. I think you got what I meant though :) so I appologise.

It's just that if you start a discussion and then moderators get involved in can spiral out of control they close the post and nothing gets sorted. It's happened a couple of times so I try to stay clear of the whole thing. I understand what you mean, I see posts saying crap like "How can I get X film on DVD for Free"

Anyway never mind all that, have you managed to get anywere with the original issue?

I don't know what I am doing.

It's all good! Like I said, I do appreciate you letting me know what the deal is. Thanks. And to answer your question, Not quite cause I can't seem to figure out the original format and don't want to make any format name changes that will render it useless..:)
